He said, "That's all." Then, he bowed at their feet, left, and went to his own house. He said to his family, "Go, I will offer a meal to the Buddha and the Sangha of monks. You prepare a meal for this many monks." They said, "Young master, very well, we will do so." Then they began to prepare butter, brown sugar, sugar, and so on. That householder also gathered friends, relatives, and brothers, and when the preparations were complete, he went with them to Jeta Grove (Jetavana). At the end of the elders, he bowed at their feet and said to the Karmadana, "Venerable, a certain householder invites the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to a feast tomorrow." Please say this. The Karmadana spoke, and the Sangha of monks agreed, and he bowed at their feet and left. Some other monks also went wandering for alms to Shravasti (Śrāvastī). After that, that householder prepared clean and abundant food and drink that very night. The next morning, he got up early, prepared the seats, and prepared water. Then, through a messenger, he informed the Blessed One, "Venerable, the meal is ready. Please consider whether it is time now." Thus, he requested the time for the meal. The monks put on their robes in the morning, took their bowls and robes, and went to the house of that householder. The Blessed One stayed in the monastery, and the meal was offered there. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, stay in the monastery for five reasons and accept offerings. What are the five? They wish to abide truly within. They wish to teach the Dharma to the gods. They wish to inspect the dwelling places. They wish to visit the sick. They wish to establish the basis for training in discipline for the Shravakas. For this reason, the Blessed One wished to establish the basis for training in discipline for the Shravakas, so he stayed in the monastery, and the meal was offered there. That householder prepared seats according to the number of the Sangha of monks and prepared food. When he saw that there were more monks than he had thought, he said, "Venerable, I offer to this many monks that you have shown me."

The seats for the monks have been prepared. If the meal is ready, many monks will come. The monks said, 'Householder, may you generate great joy because of the sudden arrival of the monks.' He said, 'Venerable ones, please say that other monks have also come. I have prepared a lot of food, and I have also prepared many seats.' The monks, lacking confidence, sat in silence. Then, some were on the verge of starvation. The monks, while scolding them, barely managed to eat a mouthful. At that time, the monks requested the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, 'The householder should be informed of how many distributing monks have suddenly arrived, and then it should be distributed to the householder.' Other monks came only to receive one portion of food, and the Blessed One instructed, 'It should also be distributed to them.' Other monks left the place where they were previously invited, and the Blessed One instructed, 'It should also be distributed to them.' Furthermore, I should establish universally applicable precepts for the resident monks of the Sangha: The resident of the Sangha should look after the Sangha of monks. If there are many monks and little food, one should say to the benefactor, 'Please be happy, there is little food and many monks, please distribute it evenly.' If there is much food and few monks, one should say, 'Please be happy, there is much food, please distribute it as you wish.' If the resident monk of the Sangha does not correctly accept and observe the established universally applicable precepts, he will commit a serious offense. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. Then, the venerable Sharaka, in the early morning, having put on his lower garment, and taking his bowl and robes, entered Shravasti for alms. After going for alms in Shravasti, he went to where the nun Phrengdenma was, and having arrived, began to teach the Dharma to the nun Phrengdenma. While he was teaching her the Dharma, the nun Phrengdenma heard that the Sangha of monks of Ridakdzinma was going to Jeta Grove with medicine for the sick monks, accompanied by the sounds of singing and music. Then she said:
