When distributing, some got scraps of cloth, some got belts, some got patches, and some used them as the edging of robes. The Blessed One spoke thus. The monks said, 'Venerable Ananda, as the Blessed One has spoken.' They divided the cloth equally and distributed it accordingly. At that time, a Brahmin got up early in the morning and stood at the gate of Shravasti. The monks also put on their lower garments in the morning, and carrying their bowls and robes, began to enter Shravasti for alms. The Brahmin said, 'Noble ones, what have you done with the cloth that I offered to the Sangha?' Then one of the monks said, 'Great Brahmin, the Sangha divided the cloth equally and distributed it. What I received was this scrap of cloth.' Another said, 'Mine is this belt.' Another said, 'Mine is this patch.' Another said, 'Mine is the edging of this robe.' The Brahmin thought, 'The Brahmins say that the Shakyaputra Shramanas are not good at distributing, but it seems that these great ones are good at distributing, and I should only ordain among them.' Then he developed faith and went to where the Blessed One was, and after arriving, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and said to the Blessed One, 'Venerable One, if I can ordain and receive full ordination in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, and obtain the status of a monk, I will practice Brahmacharya in the presence of the Blessed One.' The Blessed One said, 'Brahmin, well done! Well done! Your intention is good, and ordination is excellent. The wise, seeing five benefits, should only incline towards ordination. What are the five? The wise, seeing that I will obtain unmixed self-interest, should only incline towards ordination. I will be free from the servitude and command of those, free from obeying others and losing autonomy, free from joy and

Those actions should also be offered and praised. If a wise person sees this, they should only be devoted to renunciation. If one can attain accomplishment and the unsurpassed bliss of Nirvana, a wise person who sees this should only be devoted to renunciation. Even if I fall from the accomplishment and unsurpassed bliss of Nirvana, I will be reborn among the gods. A wise person who sees this should only be devoted to renunciation. The Buddhas and the holy disciples of the Buddha, as well as the holy beings who have attained realization, praise renunciation in many ways. A wise person who sees this should only be devoted to renunciation. Therefore, renounce well! Then, the Blessed One ordained him and conferred the full ordination by saying, "Bhikkhu, come!" and gave instructions. Through diligence and effort, that person recognized this five-aggregate cycle of samsara, both moving and unmoving, and understood that all conditioned phenomena are destroyed by the nature of decay, falling, separation, and destruction, thereby abandoning all defilements and directly realizing the state of an Arhat. That Arhat was free from desire in the three realms, regarding the mind as equal to a clod of earth and gold, seeing the sky as no different from the palm of the hand, considering sandalwood equal to cow dung, breaking the shell of ignorance with wisdom, attaining supernormal powers and individual self-realization, turning his back on existence, gain, and respect, and becoming an object of offering, remembrance, and reverence by the gods, including those with power and attendants. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, contentment has these benefits, and there are others as well. Monks, therefore, if you receive food, even if it is only a little bit of Usu leaf, you should divide it equally. If you receive clothing, even if it is only a little bit of lamp wick, you should divide it equally. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was residing in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti (Śrāvastī, an ancient Indian city of the 6th century BC, now in Uttar Pradesh). In Shravasti, a Brahmin who desired pure conduct wanted to renounce.
