The one named Nye dga' bo ordained someone, but had not previously provided him with a begging bowl. Later, when the monks' mealtime arrived, they each washed their own begging bowls, placed them on the bowl stand, and went to pay homage to the stupa. That person thought, "There are many begging bowls here, no one will eat them all. Whoever takes whichever one will eat from it and then put it back here." Therefore, I thought I could also take one for a while and then put it back. Thinking this, he began to take the begging bowl of the venerable Kun shes kauNDi nya. Another person said to him, "O long-lived one, this begging bowl belongs to the venerable Kun shes kauNDi nya, do not take it." He put that bowl down and began to take the begging bowls of the long-lived Rta thul, Bzang po, Rlangs pa, Ming chen, Gang po, Dri ma med pa, Ba lang bdag, Lag bzangs, and some other monks. The monks said, "O long-lived one, if you do not have a begging bowl, who did you ordain without a begging bowl?" He said, "The Khenpo Nye dga'." The monks ridiculed him, saying, "Who other than that perpetrator of bad conduct would ordain someone without a begging bowl?" When the monks reported this to the Blessed One, the Blessed One instructed, "A monk should not ordain someone without a begging bowl; if he does, he commits a grave offense. One who ordains should not be burdened by the six requisites." The venerable Nye ba 'khor asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, "Venerable, if monks ordain someone without a begging bowl, should it be said that he has received full ordination?" Nye ba 'khor said, "It should be said that he has received full ordination, but those who cause him to receive full ordination commit a grave offense." Venerable, if monks ordain someone with a small begging bowl, a large begging bowl, or a gray begging bowl, should it be said that he has received full ordination? Nye ba 'khor said, "It should be said that he has received full ordination, but those who cause him to receive full ordination commit a grave offense." The Buddha, the Blessed One, was in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti.

He was staying in the Joyful Garden of Giving. At that time, a person known as a thief was caught stealing, and he dropped what he had stolen and ran away. Exhausted from the journey, he sat by a tree on the path to Jeta Grove, resting his chin on his hand, deep in thought. Then, the Venerable Nanda, having dressed in his robes and carrying his bowl and Dharma robes, set out for Shravasti to beg for alms. He saw the man and said, "Venerable one, who are you?" The man replied, "Venerable one, I am a helpless person, I have nothing at all." He said, "Good sir, if that is so, why don't you become a renunciate?" The man replied, "Venerable one, since you are a renunciate, let me speak frankly for a moment. I am known as a thief, who would ordain me?" "The Buddha's teachings are opened with compassion, who would not ordain you? Trust me, and I will ordain you." "Venerable one, very well, I will become a renunciate." He ordained him and gave him full ordination, and then said, "Good sir, a deer does not feed on deer, so in the vast Shravasti, in your own territory and homeland, live by begging for alms." He dressed in his robes, took his bowl and Dharma robes, and entered Shravasti to beg for alms. As he was begging for alms, Brahmins and householders recognized him. Some said, "Wise ones, this is the one who was known as a thief, now he has become a renunciate." Others said, "The teachings of the Shakya monks are good, they even ordain those known as thieves. These ones, during the day, pretend to beg for alms, spying on houses, and at night they will come to steal." At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One. The Blessed One thought, "Some faults have occurred because the monks ordained those known as thieves. Therefore, monks should not ordain those known as thieves." Thinking this, the Blessed One said to the monks, "Monks, the criticism of Brahmins and householders has begun. Therefore, a monk should..."
