In the midst of the monastic community of monks, he sat on the prepared seat. Then, the venerable Ānanda rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and, with palms joined, bowed towards the Blessed One, saying to him: "Venerable sir, the Blessed One has repeatedly praised and wished to see the monks on the banks of the Srilanka River, but the Blessed One has not truly rejoiced in them." The Blessed One said: "Ānanda, the Tathāgata has also made the monks on the banks of the Srilanka River truly rejoice with the noble, true joy." "Venerable sir, in what way is there noble, individual, true joy in the noble Dharma-Vinaya? How did the Blessed One make them truly rejoice with the noble, true joy?" "Ānanda, here, I went to the monastery of the monks on the banks of the Srilanka River, and upon arriving, I washed my feet outside the monastery, entered the monastery, and sat down cross-legged on the prepared seat, straightening my body and establishing mindfulness. The monks on the banks of the Srilanka River also washed their feet outside the monastery, entered the monastery, and sat down cross-legged on their prepared seats, straightening their bodies and establishing mindfulness. When I entered the first dhyāna, the monks on the banks of the Srilanka River also entered the first dhyāna. When I arose from the first dhyāna and entered the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, the monks on the banks of the Srilanka River also arose from the first dhyāna and entered the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. When I arose from the realm of neither perception nor non-perception and entered the realm of nothingness, the monks on the banks of the Srilanka River also arose from the realm of neither perception nor non-perception and entered the realm of nothingness. When I arose from the realm of nothingness, I entered the first dhyāna as before.

Having entered, the monks on the bank of the Nairanjana River also arose from the sphere of nothingness and, as before, entered up to the first dhyana. Then I thought to myself: If I enter the first dhyana, the monks on the bank of the Nairanjana River will also enter the first dhyana. If I arise from the first dhyana and, as before, enter up to the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, the monks on the bank of the Nairanjana River will also arise from the first dhyana and, as before, enter up to the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. If I arise from the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception and enter the sphere of nothingness, the monks on the bank of the Nairanjana River will also arise from the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception and enter the sphere of nothingness. If I arise from the sphere of nothingness and, as before, enter up to the first dhyana, the monks on the bank of the Nairanjana River will also arise from the sphere of nothingness and, as before, enter up to the first dhyana. Now, with these aspects, these signs, and these reasons, I should abide in the perfect first dhyana, which is difficult for all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas to attain. Then, with these aspects, these signs, and these reasons, I abided in the perfect first dhyana, which is difficult for all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas to attain. Then, those monks on the bank of the Nairanjana River thought to themselves: Venerable ones, the Bhagavan is now abiding in his own abode, so we should also abide in our own abodes. Then, they also began to abide in their own abodes. Ananda, just this is the excellent joy in the noble Dharma-Vinaya, and thus one rejoices with excellent joy. Monks, excellent joy in the noble Dharma-Vinaya is good. Monks, excellent joy in the noble Dharma-Vinaya is very good, the Bhagavan on the Nairanjana River.

The monks on the bank of the Na River, Also truly rejoiced with the supreme true joy. The Blessed One caused the monks on the bank of the Ganges River to truly rejoice with the supreme true joy. Thus, when it was proclaimed everywhere, the Brahmins and householders living nearby heard it and came to see them. When they came near, the Blessed One taught them the Dharma. While teaching them the Dharma, an unpleasant smell came from their mouths, and they looked at each other and asked: Venerable ones, where does this unpleasant smell come from? They said: Venerable ones, it comes from our mouths. They said: Venerable ones, do you not discard toothpicks? Venerable ones, we do not discard them. Venerable ones, why do the Venerable ones not discard them, since the Blessed One does not allow it? Venerable ones, do you become completely pure by not eating toothpicks? They sat in silence. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Monks, the Brahmins and householders have spoken well. Therefore, it is allowed for monks to discard toothpicks. What is the reason for this? Monks, toothpicks have five benefits. What are the five? They drain bile, drain phlegm, drain wind, eliminate bad breath, and open the appetite. Monks, toothpicks are also beneficial for the eyes. After the Blessed One said to discard toothpicks, a young monk was in a secluded place, starting to discard a small piece of toothpick, and the Blessed One also went in that direction. Then, when that monk saw the Blessed One, he became ashamed and thought: It is not appropriate for me to open my mouth and eat a toothpick in front of the Blessed One. Thinking this, it got stuck in his throat. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, Have the nature of not forgetting. Then, the Blessed One pressed his head with his left hand, which had a wheel, auspicious signs, and a swastika, born from countless merits, which brings breath to those who are afraid,
