He was staying at the Jeta Grove in Anathapindika's Park. Monks were sewing robes that were soiled with earth, and they became dirty. The Blessed One instructed, "Apply a heavy coating and then sew the robes." After the Blessed One said, "Apply a heavy coating and then sew the robes," they could not find a heavy coating. The Blessed One instructed, "Knock and sweep in that direction and then sew." The Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at the Jeta Grove in Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti. Monks had made the legs of chairs pointed, and it was not permissible for them to drag them on the ground. The Blessed One instructed, "The legs of chairs should not be made pointed, but should be cut round." Even then it was not permissible, and the Blessed One instructed, "Place them on cushions of reeds or wrap them with cloth." The Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at the Jeta Grove in Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti. In Shravasti, there lived a Brahmin who, having gone outside for some business, wandered here and there, and by midday he was completely exhausted and entered the Jeta Grove. There he saw fine seats prepared and food arranged as alms. Seeing this, he was greatly pleased. Because he was wearing clothes suitable for a great man, he offered the clothes to the elder's side in order to sit down. At another time, the clothes became dirty, and the disciplinarian spread them on the younger's side. After a while, the Brahmin entered the monastery, and not seeing the clothes on the elder's side, he gradually looked and went to the younger's side. When he saw that the clothes had become dirty and were spread on the younger's side, he thought, "These clothes are suitable for a great man. What is the cause of this situation? I should observe it for a while." So he sat for a short time. When the disciplinarian began to prepare the seats in order and to sweep, he thought, "This is the cause of these clothes becoming dirty." Then he said to the disciplinarian, "Venerable one, you

Don't you even know to pat the ground, sweep it clean, and then lay things down in order? Moreover, you have soiled my clothes. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: The ground should be patted, swept clean, and then laid down in order. The disciplinarian monk laid bedding on a dust-filled mat, causing the same offense. The Blessed One said: The mats should be shaken before laying down the bedding. The disciplinarian monk did not know what to shake with, and the Blessed One said: Shake it with a piece of cloth. After he shook it with a good cloth, the Blessed One said: Shake it with a bad one. The disciplinarian monk shook it with a bad cloth, and when it became old and torn and could not be repaired, it was discarded. The Blessed One said: Make it into cushions and mats, tie them to a tree and shake them. After it became very unusable and was discarded, the Blessed One said: Even if it is very unusable, do not discard it, but mix it with clay and plaster it into the cracks in the pillars or the holes in the walls, and the benefactor's merit will increase for a long time. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Garden of Anathapindika. At that time, a young monk was walking in a certain place, and the place where he was walking was worn away by his feet dragging. Soon, a householder wandered around that area and came to that place. He thought: If it continues like this, what will this noble one's feet become? So he said: Venerable, what has made this place so worn out? He said: Householder, it is because I walk back and forth. The householder said: Venerable, if it continues like this, what will your feet become? Let me see your feet. He showed him his feet, and when he saw them, he felt compassion and said: Venerable, I will lay stone slabs on this ground, please sit comfortably. He said: Householder, the Blessed One's
