Because seeing subjugation and seeing are entering below, therefore, he thought the king spoke well and felt distressed, and he thought to himself: I will test the king. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, transformed himself into the form of a yaksha, making his hands, feet, and eyes ugly, and sat before the king, at which time he spoke in verse: One should practice well-practiced dharma, one should not practice evil practices. Practicing dharma, one will abide in happiness in this world and the next. Then, as soon as the king heard that verse, joy and great joy arose, and he said to the yaksha: Secret one, please also speak that verse! Please speak, I will listen. Then, that yaksha said to the king: If you, the god, do what I say, then I will do what you command. The king said: What to say? The yaksha said: For seven days, burn sandalwood trees in a fire pit, and if you throw yourself into it, then I will speak the verse. As soon as he heard that, the king was delighted and said to that yaksha: So be it. Then, that king proclaimed throughout the country: In seven days, the king will throw himself into the fire pit to hear the well-spoken words, so whoever wants to see the wonder should come. Then, hundreds of thousands of creatures gathered. Hundreds of thousands of gods also gathered in the sky, knowing the pure superior intention of the Bodhisattva, and gathered there to see the nature of the wonder. Then, that yaksha rose into the sky and said to the Bodhisattva: Great king, do as you have vowed. Then, that king placed the young prince on the throne, asked forgiveness from the ministers, townspeople, and villagers, and the crowd sighed, and the king approached the fire pit and spoke the verse: This fire pit, which causes great fear, is like the light of the rising sun. For the sake of the Dharma, I will leap into it with a resolute mind without hesitation. May the power of my merit transform this fire pit into a lake of sandalwood water filled with lotuses.

May coolness become good, like reverence! Having said this, the Bodhisattva jumped into the pit of fire. As soon as he jumped, the pit of fire turned into a lake. Then, Indra, the lord of the gods, seeing the king's wonderful miracle that made gods and non-gods believe, made the form of the Yaksha disappear and stayed in his own form. At that time, he spoke a verse: The Dharma that is well practiced should be practiced, the Dharma that is wrongly practiced should not be practiced. Practicing the Dharma, one dwells happily in this world and the next. Then, the Bodhisattva took that verse, wrote it on golden tablets, and sent it to all the towns, villages, districts, and royal palace surroundings of Jambudvipa. The Blessed One said: Monks, what do you think? Who was the king at that time? It was I. At that time, I also gave up my life for the sake of the Dharma, what need is there to mention it now? Monks, therefore, one should train like this: One should respect the Dharma, regard it as the teacher, please it, and make offerings to it, that is, respect the Dharma, regard it as the teacher, please it, make offerings to it, and abide by relying on it closely. Monks, you should train like this. The Blessed One said this, and the monks rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. The Blessed One said: There are five benefits to sweeping with a broom. The elder monks abandoned their meditation and recitation and began to sweep the Jeta Grove. The Blessed One said: I was speaking about the monastic officers, not about the elder monks. However, for a monk who has gone forth in the well-spoken Dharma-Vinaya, there are two tasks: namely, meditation and recitation. The Blessed One said: I was speaking about the monastic officers. Then, he was unable to completely sweep the Jeta Grove. The Blessed One said: Do as much as you can.

What needs to be done should be written down by the disciplinarian, and on the eighth and fourteenth days, the ghanta should be struck, and all the monks should take note. The Blessed One said, "On the eighth and fourteenth days, the ghanta should be struck, and all the monks should take note." Some monks, holding brooms in their hands, said that this was not good talk and were working; and non-humans dwelling in Jeta Grove, and other monks too, mocked. The Blessed One said, "A definitive statement that accords with the Dharma should be made, or sweeping should be done by the noble silent ones." Monks, after sweeping Jeta Grove, were sitting with their bodies covered in dust. Unbelievers saw this and mocked. The Blessed One said, "Having swept, and having put down the broom, those who wish to bathe should bathe. Those who do not wish to bathe should wipe their bodies with water, wash their hands and feet, and then enter." The Blessed One said, "On that day, one should inspect one's dwelling." All the monks inspected in that way. The Blessed One said, "It is not necessary for all the monks to inspect, but those who dwell there should inspect. The Blessed One said, "On the swept ground, one should recite the Buddha's teachings and walk." The monks swept, knocking and making circles, thinking, "Therefore, one must not go in that direction." The monks therefore did not go. The Blessed One said, "One should recite the verses of the monastery and walk, and one should not regret this." When the shadows of the toilet, the statues, and the life-pillar of the stupa appeared, the monks also regretted this and did not step over them. The Blessed One said, "Monks, shadows are impermanent, therefore one should also recite the verses of the monastery and step over them, and one should not regret this." The King of Gira sent two Gira slave sons, named Brana Bu and Kyongwa, as gifts to King Salgyal of Kosala. Of these two, Brana Bu was skilled in the rituals of eating and drinking, and Kyongwa was skilled in the rituals of dwellings.
