Mind. Does the Tathagata speak words that change to something else? Venerable one, no. Kashyapa, good, good! It is not the case, nor is there an opportunity, that the Tathagata would speak words that change to something else. Kashyapa, the Tathagata speaks what is true, speaks what is real, speaks the Dharma, speaks the suchness, speaks without perversion. The Tathagata has long desired to benefit the world, desired happiness, desired accomplishment and happiness, knows the path, accomplishes the path, shows the path, speaks the path, completely guides the path. The Tathagata is an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, a tamer of men, unsurpassed, a teacher of gods and men, a Buddha, a Bhagavan. Kashyapa, the world is without faith, enslaved by the senses, looking only at the present, seeing only what is at hand, hoarding much, accumulating little. They do not do what is easy, but strive with difficulty. Kashyapa, scripture is not needed, nor is wisdom needed. Understand truly as much as you see with your physical eye, and by truly examining what you see, you will be liberated. Kashyapa, do not go to me out of faith, do not go out of joy, do not go out of hearsay, do not go out of thinking about appearances, do not go out of seeing as a practitioner, do not go out of enduring the views and thoughts of a practitioner, do not go out of respect for a practitioner, do not go out because "my teacher is the practitioner Gautama." Kashyapa, however, go alone to a secluded place and contemplate those Dharmas that I have manifestly awakened to through my own direct knowledge, be diligent, understand closely, practice many times. If one perfects each and every Dharma that has been made manifest, then one abides with oneself as an island, with oneself as a refuge, with the Dharma as an island, with the Dharma as a refuge, with non-other as an island, with non-other as a refuge. Kashyapa, how does a monk abide with himself as an island, with himself as a refuge, with the Dharma as an island, with the Dharma as a refuge, with non-other as an island, with non-other as a refuge? Kashyapa, here, a

Endowed with diligence, possessing mindfulness and clear comprehension, having completely abandoned covetousness and displeasure towards the world, he dwells contemplating the body in the inner body. He dwells contemplating the body in the outer body. He dwells contemplating the body in the inner and outer body. He dwells contemplating the arising nature in the body. He dwells contemplating the decaying nature in the body. 'The body exists,' thus his mindfulness is such that it is merely knowledge, merely seeing, merely separate recollection, and he dwells well without dependence, and he does not take anything in the world. O Joyful One, similarly, a monk endowed with diligence, possessing mindfulness and clear comprehension, having completely abandoned covetousness and displeasure towards the world, dwells contemplating the body in the inner body. He dwells contemplating the body in the outer and inner body. He dwells contemplating feelings in the inner feelings, feelings in the outer feelings, and feelings in the inner and outer feelings. He dwells contemplating the mind in the inner mind, the mind in the outer mind, and the mind in the inner and outer mind. He dwells contemplating phenomena in the inner phenomena, phenomena in the outer phenomena, and phenomena in the inner and outer phenomena. He dwells contemplating the arising nature in phenomena. He dwells contemplating the decaying nature in phenomena. 'Phenomena exist,' thus his mindfulness is such that it is merely knowledge, merely seeing, merely separate recollection, and he dwells well without dependence, and he does not cling to anything in the world. O Joyful One, thus the monk dwells with himself as an island, himself as a refuge, the Dharma as an island, the Dharma as a refuge, not others as an island, not others as a refuge. O Joyful One, come here, the unmoving one, the uncheating one, the upright one, the one with a stable nature, if I admonish him internally, then the all-knowing night will become a prophecy. If I admonish him at night, then the all-knowing day will become a prophecy. O Joyful One, my Dharma is well-spoken, truly seen, without disease, without time limit, leading, seeing this is meaningful, it is to be realized by the wise themselves. This scripture is such that the teacher also appears manifestly, the sacred Dharma leads
