The suffering of being beheaded, and unwanted things, iron implements, fetters, being bound backwards, being bound by five bonds, and so on, one will experience various kinds of suffering. One will experience them separately. One will feel them. One will feel them separately. Being swirled in a whirlpool, having one's body tortured by a rack, being placed on a stake, being boiled in copper, and so on, one will experience various kinds of intense, harsh, unbearable, and death-threatening suffering. One will experience them separately. One will feel them. One will feel them separately. Being killed, being bound, being beaten, being threatened, the suffering of hunger and thirst, and various kinds of suffering arising from cold wind, rain, horseflies, long-beaked mosquitoes, wind and sun, and the touch of poisonous snakes will be experienced. One will experience them separately. One will feel them. One will feel them separately. Joyful one, in this way, beings who are tormented by such suffering and become very miserable, for those who seek the root of all suffering, those who completely seek, again and again clinging to seeking, from this arises intense, harsh, unbearable, displeasing, and pain-causing suffering of body and mind. Joyful one, therefore, birth is suffering. Aging is suffering. Sickness is suffering. Death is suffering. Separation from what is loved is suffering. Encounter with what is not loved is suffering. Not finding what is desired is also suffering. In short, the five aggregates of grasping are suffering. Joyful one, the activities of walking, sitting, standing, and lying down should also be recognized as suffering, each separately. If a meditator examines the nature of these activities, if walking makes the day pass, and one does not stand, does not sit, does not lie down, then one will only separately experience the suffering of walking, and will separately experience intensity, harshness, unbearableness, and displeasingness, and for walking, a perception of happiness will not arise.

So it is. If one spends the day sitting, not walking, not standing, not lying down, then for that sitting posture, one will only individually experience suffering, experience intensity, experience roughness, experience unbearableness, experience unpleasantness, and for that sitting posture, a feeling of happiness will not arise. If one spends the day standing, not sitting, not walking, not lying down, then for that standing posture, one will only individually experience suffering, experience intensity, experience roughness, experience unbearableness, experience unpleasantness, and for that standing posture, a feeling of happiness will not arise. If one spends the day lying down, not walking, not standing, not sitting, then for that lying posture, one will only individually experience suffering, experience intensity, experience roughness, experience unbearableness, experience unpleasantness, and for that lying posture, a feeling of happiness will not arise. Joyful one, however, in order to cut off the suffering of that behavior, a feeling of happiness arises for other newly arising sufferings. Joyful one, when arising, only this suffering arises, and when ceasing, only this suffering ceases. When arising, only formations arise, and when ceasing, only formations cease. The Tathagata, having understood the continuous connection of formations, thus taught the death and birth of sentient beings. Joyful one, all formations are impermanent, unstable, all formations are not smooth in breathing, are of the nature of change. Joyful one, therefore, one should generate aversion towards all formations, one should abandon them, one should attain liberation. Joyful one, even those who have the perception of thinking they are going to a happy realm, will experience such unbearable, terrifying, despicable, unspeakable, deceptive, and painful aspects. So what need is there to mention those born in the realms of hell, animals, and hungry ghosts? Their suffering...
