After the Blessed One said to measure with a ladder, the monks did not know where the ladder was, and the Blessed One said: There are three kinds of ladders: wooden, rope, and bamboo. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was residing in the Nyagrodha Garden in Kapilavastu. The Blessed One's younger brother, a monk named Nanda, had a body like the color of gold and possessed the thirty-two marks of a great man. He was four fingers shorter than the Blessed One, and his wife, named Beauty, was beautiful, fair, pleasing to look at, and pleasing to men. He was particularly attached to her, clinging to her, infatuated with her, losing control, fainting, particularly clinging, and particularly attached. The Blessed One, knowing that the time had come to tame him, put on his robes early in the morning, took his bowl and Dharma robes, and went to Kapilavastu for alms with the ascetic Ananda, who followed behind.
