Having built it too low, thieves and the deceitful were able to pass through. The Blessed One declared: It should not be built too low. Having built it too high, the same fault occurred. The Blessed One declared: It should be built in the middle. The monks made the inside round and the outside wide. The Blessed One declared: The outside should be made round and the inside wide, like the shape of the ocean. Sparrows and pigeons entered. The Blessed One declared: A net should be made. The monks made a net but did not install a door bolt, so snakes, scorpions, small insects, and centipedes entered. The Blessed One declared: A door bolt should be installed. The monks installed a door bolt, but the bottom did not fit. The Blessed One declared: A lower latch should be installed. If the monks installed a lower latch, the top could not be secured. The Blessed One declared: An upper latch should be installed. If the monks installed an upper latch, it would be blown open by the wind. The Blessed One declared: A crossbar should be installed. When the monks installed a crossbar, it became difficult to cut and open. The Blessed One declared: A dry axe should be carried, with which it can be cut and opened. Summary: A chisel and an iron hoop, a wooden bowl and a broom, a stone mortar, a bed and a backrest, an axe and a chisel. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Garden of Anathapindika. The Blessed One declared: A keyhole with a handle should be installed on the door leaf. The monks carved a keyhole on the door leaf, causing the door leaf to crack. The Blessed One declared: Do not carve a keyhole on the door leaf. The Blessed One declared: Do not carve a keyhole on the door leaf. When the monks installed a keyhole and pulled it, it was unstable and came out. The Blessed One declared: Therefore, it is permitted to carry a chisel, and with it, a keyhole should be installed in the hole. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Garden of Anathapindika.

He dwelt in the Jeta Grove. From the time that the venerable Pilindavatsa went forth until "Venerable ones, I am not well," it was as before. Venerable one, what is the matter with you? Venerable ones, I have a wind disease. Venerable one, please take some medicine. Venerable ones, formerly I used to heat an iron pot, and having heated water with it, I made my body sweat. Venerable one, why do you not heat it now? The Blessed One has not allowed it. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Therefore, I allow one who has a wind disease to hold an iron pot, and having heated water with it, to make his body sweat. When the Blessed One had said that an iron pot should be held, the monks were unable to take out the heated pot, and the Blessed One said: It should be fastened with an iron hook. The monks also put the iron hook into the fire, and it also became hot, and the Blessed One said: It should not be put in there; having put it in something wet, the iron pot should be heated. They made the iron pot usable with usira grass, and the Blessed One said: It should not be made usable; the heated pot itself is usable. The monks first heated water that had already been used, and then heated water that was usable, and the Blessed One said: First heat water that is usable, and then heat water that has already been used. The Buddha, the Blessed One, dwelt in the Bright Garden, the abode of the Kalanda birds, in the city of Rajagriha. Venerable ones, I am unwell here and there. Venerable one, please take some medicine. Venerable ones, formerly I used to carry a medicine bowl. Venerable one, why do you not carry it now? The Blessed One has not allowed it. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Therefore, I allow a medicine bowl to be carried.
