One should prostrate to that Buddha; if one prostrates in that way, it will also become a good prostration. At that time, a certain bhikṣu spoke in verse: "Great lord of beings, Gautami, prostrating at the feet of the teacher, may my Blessed One dwell long, may the great sage dwell for an eon." He thus entreated the teacher. He spoke thus to his aunt: "How Gautama prostrated is not how one prostrates to the Tathāgata. How should one with wisdom, thus prostrate to the Tathāgata? How would one make a good prostration? Please explain this to me." "One who strives diligently, striving oneself, always subduing others, a stable śrāvaka, understanding the meaning, that is the prostration to the Buddha." The great mother of beings, Gautami, thought: "The Blessed One praises the harmony of the saṃgha. Therefore, as long as the Blessed One dwells and the bhikṣu saṃgha is in harmony, I shall enter into nirvāṇa." Having thus thought, she arose from her seat, went to where the Blessed One was, folded her palms in reverence, and spoke thus to the Blessed One: "Venerable one, I desire to enter into nirvāṇa as I wish." After speaking thus, the Blessed One remained silent. The great mother of beings, Gautami, spoke thus to the Blessed One two or three times: "Venerable one, I desire to enter into nirvāṇa as I wish." The Blessed One remained silent two or three times. The great mother of beings, Gautami, again spoke thus to the Blessed One: "Venerable one, I desire to enter into nirvāṇa as I wish." After speaking thus, the Blessed One spoke thus to the great mother of beings, Gautami: "Gautami, do you speak for the sake of entering nirvāṇa?" "Blessed One, it is for the sake of entering nirvāṇa." "Gautami, do you speak for the sake of entering nirvāṇa?" "Sugata, it is for the sake of entering nirvāṇa." "Gautami, if you speak for the sake of entering nirvāṇa, Gautami, since all conditioned things are of such a nature, what need have I to speak? Those five hundred bhikṣuṇīs also

Having bowed to his feet with their heads, they pleaded thus: "Venerable one, we also wish to pass into complete extinction as we have thought." The Blessed One instructed: "Gautami, do you speak for the sake of extinction?" "Blessed One, for the sake of extinction." "Gautami, do you speak for the sake of extinction?" "Sugata, for the sake of extinction." "Gautami, if you speak for the sake of extinction, since all compounded things are of such a nature, why should I say more?" Then, the great Prajapati Gautami, greatly rejoiced and rejoiced in the words of the Blessed One, bowed to the feet of the Blessed One with her head, and departed. The venerable Ananda, and the non-regressing one, and the one with sound, and the venerable Kundgawo, went to that place. Having arrived, they bowed to the feet of the venerable Kundgawo, and spoke thus to the venerable Kundgawo: "Venerable one, we wish to pass into complete extinction as we have thought." "Gautami, do you speak for the sake of extinction?" "Venerable Kundgawo, for the sake of extinction." "Gautami, do you speak for the sake of extinction?" "Venerable Kundgawo, for the sake of extinction." "Gautami, if you speak for the sake of extinction, sisters, know that all compounded things are of such a nature, why should we say more?" Then, the great Prajapati Gautami, with her retinue of five hundred nuns, bowed to the feet of the elder monks, and went to the summer retreat. There, observing the aspects of those three assemblies, for seven days, whatever was heard, causing many sentient beings to obtain great excellence, thus the Dharma was taught. Then, in a wide open space, in the midst of the nun's sangha, they sat in half-lotus posture. The nuns also remained in the same way. Then, the great Prajapati Gautami entered into such a samadhi, that wherever the mind was focused, her own body disappeared from her seat, and appeared in the sky above the east, performing the four postures, walking, standing, sitting,

Just as it was done in the east, so also in the south and, west and, north directions it was done in the same way, in this way showing the four kinds of miraculous transformations in the four directions, and entered into the first dhyana. Those five hundred nuns also entered into the first dhyana. Having arisen from the first dhyana, they entered into the second dhyana, from the second into the third dhyana, from the third into the fourth dhyana, from the fourth into the sphere of infinite space, from the sphere of infinite space into the sphere of infinite consciousness, from the sphere of infinite consciousness into the sphere of nothingness, from the sphere of nothingness into the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and having arisen from the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, again entered into the sphere of nothingness.
