He sent horse messengers to the four directions to search, and one of the messengers went to the radish garden and asked the gardener: Hey, sir, has anyone come to this pleasure garden? Yes, he came. Where did he go? He took a handful of radishes and went from this road to the pond. That person followed the path he had taken and saw him dead on the chariot road. He said to King Ajatashatru: Your Majesty, he died beside a certain chariot road. The king said: Alas, alas! Great King, the deeds that have been done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor in the realm of water, nor in the realm of fire, nor in the realm of wind, but the good and non-virtuous deeds that have been done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, elements, and sources that are grasped. Even in hundreds of thousands of kalpas, deeds will not be wasted, but when they are gathered and the time is right, they will ripen as fruits for sentient beings.
