They began to mock, saying it was as if there was no joy. At that time, the monks heard this and reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One thought, "The slight fault that has occurred is due to the monks cutting their nails. Therefore, monks should not cut their nails. If they do, they will commit a serious offense." The Blessed One instructed that monks should not cut their nails. The monks' nails grew very long. The Brahmins and householders saw this and said, "Why do you noble ones keep such long nails? The virtuous Blessed One does not allow it. Noble ones, do you think you can be liberated by keeping your nails?" At that time, the monks heard this and reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "The former was a prohibition, but this is now a permission. Therefore, allow the nails to be cut into two shapes, like the edge of a razor and like a chisel." The Blessed One was staying in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Garden of Anathapindika. Whenever the householder Anathapindika made offerings to the Buddha and the Sangha of monks, everything was the same. "Do you know how to trim nails?" "Noble one, how should I do it?" "Make them yellow, red, white, and golden." I did all these things. Then he said, "You miser, you don't know anything! Just make it even like this and leave." After saying that, he left. What if it falls off now? The householder Anathapindika, regarding those who had gone forth into the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, began to mock, saying it was as if there was no approach to peace. At that time, the monks heard this and reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One thought, "The slight fault that has occurred is due to the monks cleaning their nails. Therefore, monks should not clean their nails. If they do, they will commit a serious offense." The Blessed One instructed that monks should not clean their nails. After that, the monks were doing the work of dyes and the work of bowls, etc.

The nails were dirty and unsightly. They would go begging with just such nails. The Brahmins and householders saw them and said, 'Venerable ones, why are your nails so dirty and unsightly?' They defended themselves. They said, 'Venerable ones, why don't you remove the dirt?' The Blessed One has not permitted it. 'Venerable ones, do you think that you will be cleansed by smearing yourselves with mud?' At that time, the monks appealed to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed, 'In order to remove dirt, the nails should be trimmed.' The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in the Bamboo Grove, the Kalandaka Bird Sanctuary, in Rajagriha. King Bimbisara's practice was to first offer to the Sangha whatever new grain or fruit was in season. Only then would he eat it himself. His ministers offered him mangoes, and he said, 'Go and offer them to the venerable ones.'

To use it universally is to always keep the gate of the monastery not empty. The venerable Nanda was walking and dwelling at the gate of the Grove of Light. That person went to him, prostrated, and said: A certain great king sent you here for the sake of mangoes, and for that reason, it is appropriate to bestow mangoes. He said: Hey, man, go and take as many mangoes as you need. That person went and looked near the mango trees, but he could not see them. He returned and said: Holy one, there are none. Nanda led him into the monastery, circled the entire monastery, and said: Hey, man, climb this tree. He climbed up and did not see them. Nanda said: Hey, man, go to the eastern branch, go to the southern and western branches. He went to all of them, became tired, came down, and said: Holy one, did this monastery not bear fruit this year? Virtuous one, just as there are fruits every year, so this place bears fruit. Holy one, were they blown away by wind and rain? Virtuous one, they were not blown away by wind and rain, but we picked the mango fruits when they were not yet ripe. That person returned and reported to King Rupakaya: Gods, the holy ones say that we picked the mango fruits when they were not yet ripe. He said: Good, I just want to enjoy them. Having said that, that person went back again. When the time of the festival came, the people living in the country of Magadha gathered together and said: Holy ones, did this empty monastery not bear fruit this year? Virtuous ones, just as there are fruits every year, so this place bears fruit, but we picked the mango fruits when they were not yet ripe. Holy ones, all the people living in the country of Magadha should be satisfied with ripe mangoes, but you only pick unripe fruits, and any harm done to us is not good. He said: This was not given by the king to the people living in the country of Magadha, but to the monks...
