Having given the difficulty, he taught. The prohibitions of the staff and the net should be given together as before. The Buddha Bhagavan was staying in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika-arama in Shravasti. In Shravasti there was a monk who, after eating garlic, went to where the Bhagavan was, and after going, bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and then sat on one side. The Bhagavan said to the monk: Monk, monk, I will teach you the Dharma, listen and abide. He bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and then sat on one side. The Bhagavan began to teach him the Dharma, but no matter how the Bhagavan taught him the Dharma, that monk thought, if I interrupt the Bhagavan by asking questions, that is not right. Thinking, he looked in other directions. Twice, three times, the Bhagavan said to the monk: Monk, I will teach you the Dharma, listen. When he taught in this way, the monk also looked in other directions twice, three times, and then bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and left from before the Bhagavan. The Buddhas, the Bhagavans, knowingly make difficulties, therefore the Buddha Bhagavan questioned the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, why does that monk look in other directions no matter how I teach the Dharma? He replied: Venerable, that monk ate garlic. Ananda, because of what do monks, like eating garlic, become obstacles to the truth? The Bhagavan said: Yes, that is so. Ananda, if this monk had not eaten garlic today, then today he would have been able to destroy the twenty high mountains of the view of the aggregate of destruction with the vajra of wisdom, and realize the fruit of stream-entry. Ananda, therefore, from now on, monks should not consume garlic, coriander, and asafoetida, and if they consume them, it will constitute a serious offense. Also at that time, the Venerable Shariputra and his retinue gathered there, sitting, thinking, monk

If this person does not see the truth today, let's see if they will see it tomorrow! Thinking this, but they did not see it. Then he observed the extreme fourth dhyana, thinking about when he would be able to see it. However, he still did not see it. The venerable Shariputra arose from that samadhi and spoke in verses: Having abandoned this supreme leisure, this person here, the truths, will never truly be seen, that unchanging place exists. Then, the Blessed One, knowing the mind of the venerable Shariputra, said to the venerable Shariputra: Shariputra, do not enter into the realm of the Buddha. From here, beyond the realm of wisdom of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, possessing knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the Knower of the World, the Tamer of Men, the Unequaled One, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, a teacher called the Subduer of All, will appear. In that teaching, this person, having renounced, having abandoned all afflictions, will realize the state of Arhat. After saying this, the Blessed One thought: The slight fault that has occurred is that the monks have eaten garlic. Therefore, monks should not eat garlic. If they eat it, they will commit a serious offense. The Blessed One said: Monks should not eat garlic. Then, a sick monk went to a doctor, and to be cured, said: Good sir, I have this kind of illness, please prescribe medicine. The doctor said: Holy one, please eat garlic, and you will be healed. He said: Good sir, the Blessed One does not allow it. The doctor said: Holy one, this is your medicine, others cannot heal you. At that time, he spoke to the monks. The monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: If the doctor says, monk, this is your medicine, others cannot heal you, then say so.
