and stole from individual dwellings. Even if other monks lost something, we did not notice how much was lost. At that time, the monks petitioned the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: Therefore, permission is granted to wear rings. After the Blessed One instructed that rings were allowed to be worn, the group of six monks wore rings made of gold, silver, beryl, and crystal, and rings adorned with various ring ornaments. Then, Brahmins and householders saw them and stretched out their hands, saying: Good appearance, without illness, without illness! They said: What is this noble one? Good appearance, the Blessed One has allowed rings. They slandered and mocked, saying: The sons of the Shakyas have lost the dignity of a Shramana and the dignity of a Brahmachari. Now they give names to rings and adorn themselves with ornaments. At that time, the monks heard this and petitioned the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: A monk should not wear rings made of gold, silver, beryl, and crystal, nor should he wear finger rings, but he may wear five kinds of rings, namely those made of brass, copper, red ochre, conch shell, and horn. The group of six monks drew pictures of men and women having intercourse on the rings, and the Brahmins and householders said: Noble one, are you tormented by the pleasures of desire? At that time, the monks petitioned the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: There are two kinds of rings, those for the Sangha and those for individuals. For the Sangha's ring, draw a wheel in the center, draw deer on both sides, and write the name of the monastery owner below. For the individual's ring, draw a skeleton or a skull. In summary: Cutting nails and cleaning are prohibited, as well as mangoes and amla. Eight bowls are prohibited, and two are allowed. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was residing in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Anathapindika's Garden of the Generous. At that time, the householder Anathapindika offered to the Buddha.

At the time when Jeta offered the Jeta Grove to the community of monks, he said to the barber: "Hey, go to the Jeta Grove and shave the hair and beards of the noble ones." He went to the Jeta Grove, and the behavior of the Sixes was such that none of the Sixes would leave the gate of the Jeta Grove empty. The venerable Nanda was walking and sitting in the Jeta Grove, and he saw him from afar and said: "Welcome, handsome one! Welcome! You are like the moon, it has been a long time since you came, where do you come from?" He said: "Venerable, the householder sent me here to shave the hair and beards of the noble ones." He said: "Are you good at trimming nails?" "Venerable, this is my craft." He looked, and when he came near, Nanda stretched out his hand. The barber said: "Venerable, how should I shave?" "Handsome one, shave like the tip of a grain." After he shaved like the tip of a grain, he said: "Now make it like the corner of a fence, the edge of a razor, an axe, and a crescent moon." He did it like that, like a door, and finally said: "Miser, you don't understand anything! Make it even like this and go." He didn't let him go until sunset. After sunset, he went to the householder Anathapindika, and Anathapindika said: "Hey, how many noble ones did you shave the heads and beards of?" "Where did I shave the hair and beards of the noble ones? The ascetic Nanda, who holds a wrong livelihood, pestered me and made me trim the nails like the tip of a grain, the corner of a fence, the edge of a razor, an axe, and a crescent moon. I did all kinds of things, and then he said: 'Miser, you don't understand anything! Make it even like this and go.' After saying this, he finally let me go, what should I do?" The householder Anathapindika, the renunciates were very pleased with the well-spoken Vinaya.
