Similar to a lotus stalk, like sandalwood and an axe, equal to the sky and the palm of the hand, having destroyed the shell of the egg of ignorance, having obtained wisdom, clairvoyance, and individual correct knowledge, turning away from worldly existence and gain, and from respect, he became an Arhat to be offered to, bowed down to, and respectfully praised by gods including those with power and attendants. He had two throats born from karma, one for vomiting, and the other for swallowing. When the Blessed One had not established the precept regarding untimely food, he would vomit and swallow. When the precept was established, he would vomit and discard, therefore his body became emaciated, weak, scrawny, and withered. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, speak knowingly, the Buddha, the Blessed One, said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, why is Nanda emaciated, weak, scrawny, and withered? He reported the situation as it was, and the Blessed One said: Ananda, whoever has two throats born from the ripening of karma should discard the vomit two or three times, rinse his mouth, and swallow the remainder, and should not regret this. The monks vomited after eating food, and they regretted it, and the Blessed One said: If another monk vomits after eating food, he should rinse his mouth, and should not regret this. When the venerable Nanda was ordained, Brahmins and householders ridiculed and slandered, saying that the Shakyaputra monks had lost the conduct of a Shramana, lost the conduct of a Brahmachari, and now even terrible people like Nanda are being ordained. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: The great Shravaka, like Mount Meru, causes many people not to have faith. Therefore, do not let Nanda reside in the central region. Then, he said to the venerable Nanda: Nanda, from now on, do not reside in the central region, but rely on the dwellings of the border regions. Venerable, that

Thus I prostrate. Thus, the venerable Ox-master, having heard from the Blessed One, disappeared from Shravasti and dwelt in the empty mansion of the Shirisha tree. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks: Monks, among my monastic disciples who have faith in remote dwellings, this is the foremost, namely the monk Ox-master. The monks, having arisen in doubt, in order to dispel all doubt, asked the Blessed One: Venerable one, what deeds did the venerable Ox-master commit, that by the ripening of that deed, his body became like an ox? The Blessed One said: Monks, the deeds done and accumulated by the Ox-master himself, the gathering, the transformation of conditions, being near like a river, will surely be experienced. How can others experience the deeds done by the Ox-master himself? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not ripen in the external earth element, not in the water element, not in the fire element, not in the wind element, but the good and non-virtuous deeds done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, sense bases, and elements that are grasped. Even in hundreds of thousands of eons, deeds are not wasted; when the conditions are gathered and the time has come, they ripen as fruit for embodied beings. Monks, in the past, in this very auspicious eon, when the life span of beings was twenty thousand years, there was a Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, named Light Treasury, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, Tamer of Beings, Unsurpassed Charioteer, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Blessed One, who appeared in the world. He went forth in his teachings. Which monk went forth? It was an old and weak man. When he was washing his bowl, he was reciting scriptures with another monk, and after a long time, his preceptor ate food at will, and he, being attached to reciting scriptures, mocked his preceptor. After some time, he finished eating and washed his bowl himself, and then went to the preceptor and saw that he was still eating.

Then that all-around one said: Abbot, are you sitting chewing like an old ox? He thought: If I say even a little to this all-around one, it will cause a quarrel between the Jethus. When I am separated from the all-around one, then I will ask. Thinking, he separated from that all-around one and said: Venerable one, what are you saying? He said: Are you standing like an old ox? He said that. He said: Venerable one, do you know who I am? I know, you are also one who has gone forth in the teachings of the perfectly complete Buddha Kashyapa, and I am also one who has gone forth in those same teachings. He said: That is so, if that is true, but whatever a renunciate should do, or whatever should be done, I have done. Therefore, I am liberated from all bonds. You are bound by all bonds. You have spoken harsh words, you must lessen that action, completely exhaust it, completely end it, may fault upon fault be upon you. He confessed his fault. Because this one used the word "old ox" to an Arhat Bhikshu, and always used that saying, the ripening of that action caused him to be born as an ox for five hundred lifetimes. The remainder of that action caused him to be born now with a body like an ox. Then, the Bhikshus asked the Buddha Bhagavan: Venerable one, what action did the Venerable Ox do, that the Bhagavan is shown as the best among those who have faith in the remote dwelling places? The Bhagavan said: It is by the power of aspiration. Where did he make the aspiration? This one also became a renunciate in the teachings of the perfectly complete Buddha Kashyapa. There, he practiced celibacy for one lifetime, but did not gain any accumulation of qualities. The place where he became a renunciate, the Bhagavan Kashyapa predicted that it would be the best among those who have faith in the remote dwelling places. There he made the aspiration: In this way, may I become the Bhagavan, the perfectly complete Buddha, the unsurpassed field of merit.
