The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jetavana in Anathapindika's Grove in Shravasti. Brahmins and faithful householders were offering alms bowls to the monks, but the monks were not accepting them. They said, "Venerable ones, when the Buddha, the Bhagavan, had not yet appeared in the world, the non-Buddhists were the worthy recipients of offerings. Now, since the Buddha, the Bhagavan, has appeared in the world, you are the worthy recipients of offerings. If you do not accept them, will we not have any provisions for the path of virtue from this world to the next? Please accept them!" At that time, the monks requested the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan instructed, "For the sake of the Sangha, the alms bowls should be accepted." The Bhagavan instructed, "For the sake of the Sangha, the alms bowls should be accepted." If appointed, they should be removed. What are the five? Acting out of desire, out of hatred, out of ignorance, out of fear, and not knowing whether the Sangha's meals have been distributed or not. A steward (Sder da pa) of the Sangha's meals who possesses five qualities, if not appointed, should be appointed. If appointed, they should not be removed. What are the five? Not acting out of desire, not out of hatred, not out of ignorance, not acting out of fear, and knowing whether the Sangha's meals have been distributed or not. The method of appointment is as follows: After arranging the seats, strike the bell and inform the Sangha with words of inquiry. After the entire Sangha has gathered and is seated, first inquire: You, named so-and-so, are you willing to be appointed as the distributor of the Sangha's meals? If willing, they should say: I am willing. After that, a monk should make a request and then perform the karma: Venerable Sangha, please listen. This monk, named so-and-so, is willing to distribute the Sangha's meals. If the Sangha deems it timely and permissible, please allow the Sangha to appoint this person named so-and-so as the steward (Sder da pa) of the Sangha's meals, and this steward (Sder da pa) of the Sangha's meals, named so-and-so, will distribute the Sangha's meals. This is the request. The karma is done as follows: Venerable Sangha, please listen. This monk, named so-and-so, is willing to distribute meals to the Sangha.
