And, the Blessed One said: A monk who wishes to travel, if he does not have a water strainer, should ask a fellow monk: Do you have a water strainer? If he says: Yes. Then he should say: Will you give it to me or not? If he says: I will give it. Then he may travel. Otherwise, he should not travel. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Park in Prince Jeta's Grove. In Shravasti, two monks were traveling. One of them had a water strainer, and the other did not. The one who did not have it asked the other: Do you have a water strainer? He said: Yes. Will you lend it to me? Or not? I will lend it. As they were traveling, when they reached the road, some guests came, and the work of the one who had the water strainer was completed by that guest. Therefore, he began to return. The other one said: Venerable, lend me the water strainer that you promised me. He said: If that is the case, that is true. Therefore, I will give it for the purpose of straining water, but not give it entirely. Because he did not give it, when he was in trouble. The monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: A monk who does not have a water strainer should ask a fellow monk: Do you have a water strainer? If he says: Yes. Then he should say: Will you give it to me or not? If he says: I will give it. If he says: If you return, or go to another place, will you give it or not? If he says: I will give it. Then he may travel. Otherwise, he should not travel. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Park in Prince Jeta's Grove. At that time, the Venerable Ananda asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable, without a water strainer, is it allowed to go to another monastery or another village? Ananda, it is not allowed. If going there will not lead to trouble, then it is allowed. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Park in Prince Jeta's Grove.

He was dwelling in the garden of the unsurpassed food-giving. Then, the venerable Ānanda asked the Blessed One: Venerable, with one water strainer, is it permitted to travel for two people? Ānanda: If going there will not lead to poverty, it is permitted. Venerable, with one water strainer, is it permitted for many people or the sangha to travel? Ānanda: If going there will not lead to poverty, it is permitted. Venerable, without a water strainer, is it permitted to take water from the riverbank? Ānanda: It is permitted. For fast-flowing water, if it has not mixed with other water, it should be examined every yojana. If it has mixed with other water, it should be examined at each place where it is taken. For slow-flowing water, it should be examined at the bank and the bank. Among them, fast-flowing is a swift current. Slow-flowing is a sluggish current. Venerable, what is the danger of the bank? Ānanda: A fathom's circumference. Venerable, is it not permitted to drink water that has not been strained and not been examined? Ānanda: It is not permitted. Venerable, is it permitted to drink water that has not been strained but has been examined? Ānanda: It is permitted, saying, 'Clean with the eyes.' Venerable, is it permitted to drink water that has been strained and examined? Ānanda: It is permitted. However, there are five kinds of water that are permissible: that which is permissible by the sangha, that which is permissible by an individual, that which is permissible by a water strainer, that which is permissible by a spring, and that which is permissible by a well. Among them, that which is permissible by the sangha is: whatever water is strained by a bhikṣu appointed by the unanimous sangha, that which is permissible by the sangha, a bhikṣu may enjoy. That which is permissible by an individual is: whatever bhikṣu whose morality is not impaired, whose view is not impaired, whose conduct is not impaired, and whose livelihood is not impaired, is completely pure, that which is permissible by an individual, a bhikṣu may enjoy. That which is permissible by a water strainer is: whatever water is strained by a water strainer that has never been examined, it should be drunk. That which is permissible by a spring is: flowing water. That which is permissible by a well is: whatever water from a well is clear, taken from sunset until sunrise, that which is permissible by a well, the water should be drunk. The bhikṣus saw that for a long time they were disturbed by turbid water, and the Blessed One...
