I prayed that I might become the best of the monks with pleasant voices, and by the power of that prayer, I have now renounced in my doctrine, abandoned all defilements, and realized the state of an Arhat. I have become the best of the monks with pleasant voices. Monks, therefore, from "deeds that are entirely dark, their results are also entirely dark," to "Monks, you should train yourselves in this way," is the same as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti. At that time, when the monks recited the Dharma, they recited it like scattering rue seeds, while the non-Buddhists recited the scriptures with pleasant voices. The householder Anathapindika's practice was to get up early in the morning and go to pay homage to the feet of the Blessed One. He heard the non-Buddhists reciting the scriptures with pleasant voices and thought: "Although the teachings of the non-Buddhists are flawed, they recite the scriptures with pleasant voices. But my noble ones recite the scriptures like scattering rue seeds. This is what I should do." Then he went to where the Blessed One was, and after arriving, he bowed his head at the Blessed One's feet and sat down on one side. After sitting down on one side, the householder Anathapindika said to the Blessed One: "Venerable one, although the teachings of the non-Buddhists are flawed, they recite the scriptures with pleasant voices. But the noble ones recite the scriptures like scattering rue seeds. Therefore, if the Blessed One would allow the noble ones to also recite the scriptures with pleasant voices, that would be excellent." The Blessed One did not say anything to the householder Anathapindika, indicating his approval. The householder Anathapindika, knowing that the Blessed One had approved by not saying anything, bowed his head at the Blessed One's feet and then departed from the Blessed One's presence. Then the Blessed One addressed the monks

Ordered: Monks, therefore, you are allowed to recite the Dharma with chanting. After the Blessed One ordered that the Dharma should be recited with chanting, the monks recited, chanted, intoned, and inquired with chanting. Once, when the householder Anāthapiṇḍada went to Jeta's Grove, he heard it and said: Venerables, have you set up a musician's residence in your monastery? At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One ordered: Monks should not recite, chant, intone, or inquire with chanting. In this way, proclaiming the virtues of the teacher, and reciting the third in the lineage, should be recited with chanting. After the Blessed One ordered that these should be recited with chanting, a young man was unfamiliar with chanting. When he taught the scriptures, he taught like scattering a collection of ash tree fruits. The monks said: Venerable, the Blessed One has allowed chanting, please recite with chanting. He said: Venerables, I do not know chanting. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One ordered: Chanting should be learned. After the Blessed One ordered that chanting should be learned, when the monks were learning chanting in the corridors, residences, and gatehouses, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada came to the monastery, and hearing it, said: Venerables, this monastery is not a musician's residence, have you not yet sent away those musicians? At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One ordered: Chanting should be learned in a secluded place. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Shravasti, in Jeta's Grove of Prince Jeta, in Anāthapiṇḍada's Garden. A monk stood up and took out his bowl, and the monks...

They said to him: O long-lived one, do not stand and take out the alms bowl. He said: What is the fault? They said: This alms bowl will be broken, what other fault will there be? When he sat without saying anything, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: A monk should not stand and take out the alms bowl. Similarly, it should be widely applied to putting in, washing, and drying. The verse says: Small paths and three containers, felt should not be made into a net, mats and non-separation, the great sage allows. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at the place of the son of Evil Abandonment, on the mountain where the crocodile kills children, in the terrifying forest mountain, in the deer's abode. When Prince Youthful Intelligence had the lotus mansion built, painted with one hundred and one colors, and laid out long silk carpets, inviting the Blessed One and the assembly of hearers to a meal. When the Blessed One wanted to enter the lotus mansion, he did not enter. Prince Youthful Intelligence said: Blessed One, please enter. However, the Blessed One did not enter. Prince Youthful Intelligence collected the carpets, and the non-Buddhists heard and said: Wise ones, the Shramana Gautama is not a place worthy of such respect. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Monks, if Brahmins and faithful householders also lay out long silk carpets on the small paths, and say, "Saints, please enter for the sake of compassion for us," in order to subdue the non-Buddhists, one should subdue and go with the mind of impermanence, and one should not regret this. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at the place of the son of Evil Abandonment, on the mountain where the crocodile kills children, in the terrifying forest mountain, in the deer's abode. A monk was walking holding an alms bowl in his hand, and he tilted it to another side, and the alms bowl fell to the ground and broke, becoming an obstacle for him.
