Who will experience it individually? Monks, what is done and accumulated by karma will not mature in the external realm of earth, will not mature in the realm of water, will not mature in the realm of fire, and will not mature in the realm of wind. Like this, what is done and accumulated by good and bad karma will mature in the aggregates, realms, and sources that have been taken. Even if karma passes through hundreds of kalpas, it will not be in vain; when causes and conditions come together, it will become a result for sentient beings. Monks, in the past, in this very fortunate kalpa, when the lifespan of beings reached forty thousand years, the teacher, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Well-Gone One, the Knower of the World, the Tamer of Beings, the Unsurpassed One, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, named Krakucchanda Buddha, appeared in the world. He completed all the deeds of a Buddha, and like a fire with exhausted fuel, he passed into the realm of nirvana without remainder. King Bimbisara made vast offerings to the body of Krakucchanda Buddha and began to build a stupa that was one yojana in circumference and one and a half yojanas in height, and he appointed a foreman who was faithful, good, virtuous, and diligent in his work. At that time, there was another worker who saw the very large stupa being built and began to mock, saying, 'Knowledgeable ones, the king has begun to build such a large stupa, I don't know when it will be finished.' The foreman said to him, 'Hey, why are you mocking? If you can't do it, leave the work.' That person stood there without saying a word, and the foreman began to drive him away. That person begged for forgiveness and began to work again, but the stupa was not yet finished, and he began to mock again, and the foreman drove him away again. He begged for forgiveness with great effort and began to work again. After who knows how long, this stupa, which one could never tire of looking at, captivated the eyes and minds of hundreds of thousands of beings.

It was completed. Then that hired worker saw it and, while working like this, thought, "I have done something bad to him," and felt regret. Thinking that he must make offerings to him in every way, he had a golden bell made from the wages he received and hung it on the stupa with great faith. Monks, at that time, that hired worker was none other than this monk Snyanpa Zangden. When he was working on the stupa of the perfectly complete Buddha, Krakucchanda, the ripening of the karma of what he had done badly caused him to be born with an ugly appearance and a small body. Again, because he developed faith, had a golden bell made, and hung it on the stupa, the ripening of that karma caused his voice to become melodious. Then, again, the monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the destroyer of all doubts: "Venerable and long-lived Snyanpa Zangden, what deed did he do that caused his voice to pervade even below the world of Brahma?" The Blessed One said: "Monks, the son of a noble family, Snyanpa Zangden himself, from the accumulation of karma to the point of becoming a fruit, is just as before. Monks, in the past, in this very fortunate eon, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, the teacher, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Blissful One, the Knower of the World, the Tamer of Beings, the Unsurpassed One, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, Krakucchanda, appeared in the world, and he dwelt near the Deer Park at Ṛṣipatana in Vārāṇasī. Between Vārāṇasī and Ṛṣipatana there was a mango tree, and a male cuckoo lived on it. Whenever the Buddha, the Blessed One, Krakucchanda, went to Vārāṇasī for alms, it would focus intently on him and utter a particularly melodious sound, and look at him again and again. Its mind was satisfied, and it developed faith. At another time, it made a sound, responding to the Perfectly Complete Buddha Krakucchanda.

Having circumambulated three times, he felt joy and happiness, and sat under that mango tree. As soon as he sat down, a hawk snatched his life away, ending his life, and he was reborn as a Brahmin skilled in six occupations. Monks, that cuckoo bird at that time was none other than the monk Good Voice, who possessed a beautiful voice. He praised the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector with a beautiful sound and circumambulated him three times. Due to the maturation of that action, his voice pervaded all the way down from the Brahma world. Then, the monks again had doubts and asked the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who cuts off all doubts: "Venerable one, what actions did the venerable and long-lived Good Voice do, that due to the maturation of those actions, he was able to renounce in the Bhagavan's teachings, abandon all defilements, directly realize the state of an Arhat, and be praised by the Bhagavan as the best of all sound offerings?" The Bhagavan replied: "That is due to the power of aspiration. Where did he make the aspiration? In the teachings of the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector, a monk renounced and was praised by the Bhagavan Light Protector as the best of all sound offerings." At that time, this person also practiced pure conduct for as long as he lived, without gaining any accumulation of qualities, and then at the time of his death, he made this aspiration: "In the presence of the Bhagavan, the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector, I practiced pure conduct for as long as I lived, without gaining any accumulation of qualities. By this root of my virtue, the Bhagavan, the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector, said to the Brahmin boy: 'Brahmin boy, in the future, when the lifespan of beings is a hundred years, there will appear a Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly complete Buddha Shakyamuni.' May I renounce in his teachings, abandon all defilements, directly realize the state of an Arhat, and just as this preceptor was praised by the Bhagavan, the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector, as the best of all sound offerings, may I also be praised by the Bhagavan with sound.
