Mindfulness! Monks, cultivate mindfulness focused on the body, and I guarantee you will become non-returners. Therefore, monks should strike at others, not strike at others. If they strike, it will become a serious offense. The Buddha Bhagavan was staying in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. In Shravasti, there lived a householder who took a wife from the same caste, and he played with her, rejoiced, and enjoyed happiness together. He played, rejoiced, and enjoyed happiness with her, and his wife conceived. After eight or nine months, she gave birth to a boy who was handsome, pleasing to the eye, and beautiful. At another time, he renounced and upheld the well-spoken Vinaya, and at that time, he was young, living in the countryside, carrying a bowl and robes, and went wandering. As he was wandering, boils appeared on his face, and he had a doctor perform bloodletting, and his face became unsightly. At another time, he went to Shravasti, and a monk did not allow him to enter. He went to another monk and said: Venerable, do you not know me? He said: If I do not recognize your good looks, who are you? He said: My name is so-and-so, the son of such-and-such householder, I renounced there, and came here from that place. He said: O long-lived one, if you were handsome and of good color, why has your face become unsightly? He told all that had happened, and at that time the monks reported to the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan taught: A monk's face is like a mirror, therefore a monk should not have a doctor perform bloodletting on his face. If he has it done, it will become a serious offense. The Bhagavan taught that a monk's face should not have bloodletting performed, and the monks, because of excessive blood, needed bloodletting, and the monks did not perform bloodletting, and the Bhagavan taught: Bloodletting should be performed, do not regret this.

Thus I have heard. At one time, the Blessed One (梵文:Bhagavān,梵文罗马拟音:bhagavat,汉语字面意思:The Lord) was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti. At that time, there were two communities in Shravasti: the merchant community and the soldier community. Of these two, the merchant community defeated the soldier community with sounds of dance, song, and music. The soldier community, in turn, defeated the merchant community with hostile tactics. Then, at another time, the soldier community said, "Wise ones, these people have defeated us with sounds of dance, song, and music, and we have defeated them with hostile tactics. But what means shall we use to defeat them with sounds of dance, song, and music?" Some of them said, "Indeed, we should also learn dance, song, and music." Some said, "Excellent, from whom shall we learn?" They said, "The venerable group of six are skilled in dance, song, and music. We should learn from them, and since they are masters of desire, they will give even if we ask for a little." They said, "Excellent, let us give in that way." They went to where the group of six were, and after arriving, they bowed at their feet and said, "Venerable ones, please teach us dance, song, and music." They said, "Wise ones, if you give us the cost of instruction, we will teach you." "Venerable ones, we will offer you medicine and other necessities." They taught them dance, song, and music. When they became proficient, they defeated the merchant community with both hostile tactics and sounds of dance, song, and music. Those people said, "Good sirs, before you defeated us with hostile tactics, and we defeated you with sounds of dance, song, and music. Now, what means have you used to defeat both of us?" They said, "Now we have learned." "From whom did you learn?" "From the venerable group of six." These people are Shramanas, sons of the Shakya clan.

Their practice as ascetics is false, and their practice as Brahmins is also false. They would scold, saying, 'They even learn dancing, singing, and the sounds of music.' They would accuse and revile. In that instance, the monks petitioned the Blessed One, and the Blessed One, thinking that the faults committed by the monks were due to learning dancing, singing, and the sounds of music, commanded, 'Therefore, a monk should not learn dancing, singing, and the sounds of music. If he learns, he will commit a serious offense.' The Blessed One commanded that a monk should not learn dancing, singing, and the sounds of music. Those assemblies forgot and went again to the group of six monks and said, 'Venerable ones, even if we have abandoned those, please allow us to learn.' They said, 'Good sirs, the Blessed One has established the training rule that a monk should not learn dancing, singing, and the sounds of music, so we cannot learn.' 'Venerable ones, if we do not learn, please just practice a little and then leave.' They said, 'Good sirs, go.' They went there and practiced, and those people defeated them. Again, 'The practice of ascetics is false, and the practice of Brahmins is also false,' from that statement until scolding, accusing, and reviling, it was the same as before. In that instance, the monks petitioned the Blessed One, and the Blessed One, thinking that the faults committed by the monks were due to practicing dancing, singing, and the sounds of music, commanded, 'Therefore, a monk should not practice dancing, singing, and the sounds of music. If he practices, he will commit a serious offense.' The Blessed One commanded that a monk should not practice dancing, singing, and the sounds of music. Those assemblies forgot again and went again to the group of six monks and said the same thing. They said, 'Good sirs, the Blessed One has forbidden it, so we cannot practice.' They said, 'Venerable ones, you go away and take a look.'
