Having taken a mirror and looked at their faces, they said: Dear ones, dear ones, how are we, are we good? The Brahmins and householders said: Venerable ones, your heads are shaved and your armpits are hairy, how can your faces be beautiful? These ascetics must be tormented by the qualities of desire. When they were sitting without saying anything, the monks heard it and reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Therefore, a monk should not look at his face in a mirror. If he does, it will be a serious offense. The Blessed One declared that a monk should not look at his face in a mirror. They then began to look at their faces in water. The Blessed One said: One should not look at one's face in water either. The Blessed One declared that a monk should not look at his face in water either. When the monks looked at their faces in the water, they saw their faces and regretted it. The Blessed One said: There is no transgression in looking to examine water, wounds, wrinkles, old age, and the prior and subsequent states of the body. The incident took place in Shravasti. The six groups of monks, having put on their robes in the morning, took their bowls and Dharma robes and went to Shravasti for alms. They saw Brahmins and householders placing cleaning utensils on the edges of their clothes. The six groups of monks took their toothbrushes and combed their hair, saying: Dear ones, dear ones, how are we, are we good? The Brahmins and householders said: Venerable ones, your heads are shaved and your armpits are hairy, how can your hair be beautiful? These ascetics must be tormented by the qualities of desire.

When they began to comb with a bamboo brush, the Blessed One said: One should not comb with a bamboo brush either. If one combs, it will be a serious offense. The story takes place in Shravasti. The Blessed One had instructed that monks should not comb their hair with a bamboo brush. They made one side into a comb and one side into a bamboo brush to comb their hair. The Blessed One said: Neither a comb nor a bamboo brush should be used to comb hair. The story takes place in Shravasti. When Anathapindika offered the Jeta Grove to the Buddha and the Sangha of monks, it was like the previous story about the barber and so on. Nanda said: Do you know how to make a topknot, Venerable? This is my job. Please take a look. Venerable, how should I make it? Make it big? He made the topknot very big. Nanda said: Cut off one side. He cut off one side. He said: Cut the second side, the third side, up to the seventh side. He cut up to the seventh side. Nanda said: Miser, you don't know anything, make it like before and go. It was like the previous story. The Blessed One said: Therefore, a monk should not make a topknot. If one makes a topknot, it will be a serious offense. The story takes place in Shravasti. The Venerable Gavampati lived in Kaushambi, in the sow's cave of King Udayana's garden, which was surrounded by the Nairanjana River. Then, at another time, when the spring season arrived, the trees blossomed, and swans, cranes, peacocks, parrots, partridges, cuckoos, and songbirds made sounds in the garden, King Udayana of Vatsa called the person who guarded the garden and said: Hey, you come here. I am going to the garden. Sweep away all the stones, sand, and rubble from the wall surrounding the Nairanjana River, and also clean the water channels, and make the garden

Having understood, also trim the hedges. The person guarding the garden, having heard the words of the king of Bassa, Chalaka, saying to act according to the divine will, then cleared away all the stones, gravel, and tiles surrounding the mountains and rivers, and also left the water channels. Having inspected the garden and trimmed the hedges, he then went to the place where the king of Bassa, Chalaka, was. Having arrived, he said these words to the king of Bassa, Chalaka: O God, please understand it this way. The stones, gravel, and tiles surrounding the mountains and rivers have all been cleared away, and the water channels have also been left. The garden has also been inspected. The hedges have also been trimmed. O God, please understand that the time has now come. Then, the king of Bassa, Chalaka, surrounded by a host of consorts, went to the garden. There, he experienced joy, play, and pleasure, and then he fell asleep. The nature of women is to like flowers and fruits, so his retinue of consorts wandered freely in that garden. At that time, the venerable Valangga, with long hair and beard, wearing old Dharma robes and tattered skirts, was resting under a tree. The consorts saw the venerable Valangga, with long hair and beard, wearing old Dharma robes and tattered skirts. Having seen him, they were also surprised. Oh my, there is a ghost here! Oh my, there is a ghost here! They cried out in fear, and the venerable Valangga stood up from there and quickly ran into the sow's cave. That sound woke the king, and he drew his sword from its sheath and ran over, asking the women where the ghost was. They said: O God, it is in the sow's cave. Then, the king of Bassa, Chalaka, holding a weapon, sat at the entrance of the sow's cave and said: Hey, monster, who are you? He said: O God, I am a renunciate. Where are you a renunciate from? I am a renunciate of the son of Shakya. Are you an Arhat? O God, no. Then are you a Non-Returner? A Once-Returner? Or a Stream-Enterer? O God, no.
