It happened that my alms bowl was broken, and when I took it to be repaired, it would tip over, so I came here. He said: Venerable, have you not heard that it is rare for craftsmen to speak the truth? I also know how to craft, but the Blessed One does not allow it. When he said this, the monks heard it and reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Therefore, if there are monks who are craftsmen, I allow them to repair alms bowls in a secluded place. That monk went to that monk and said: Venerable, the Blessed One has allowed it, please repair this alms bowl! He said: Venerable, this cannot be repaired with hands alone, but also requires blacksmith's tools. When he said this, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: For the sake of the Sangha, I allow blacksmith's tools to be kept nearby. The origin of the story is in Shravasti (Jetavana). The robes of the monks needed to be sewn, and they tore them with their hands, which made them look bad. The Blessed One said: Do not tear them with your hands, but cut them with a knife. After the Blessed One said to cut them with a knife, a monk needed to cut his robe, so he borrowed a knife from a householder and cut it. Afterwards, he returned the knife to the householder. The householder said: Venerable, it is yours! The Blessed One does not allow it. When he said this, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Therefore, I allow monks to carry a knife. After the Blessed One said to carry a knife, the group of six monks carried knives made of gold, silver, beryl, and crystal, with handles adorned with polished decorations. Brahmins and householders said: Venerables, what is this? They said: The Blessed One has allowed knives. Venerables, you ascetics are tormented by the pleasures of desire! Having said this, they became ashamed and sat there without saying a word. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One.

The venerable one said: A monk should not carry a scabbard made of gold, silver, beryl, or crystal, with variegated or ornate patterns, but should carry an iron scabbard. When the Blessed One said that an iron scabbard should be carried, they carried very large knives. Brahmins and householders said: "Venerable ones, what is this?" "Good sirs, it is a scabbard." "Venerable ones, it is a knife, not a scabbard." When they said this, the monks informed the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: "A very large knife should not be carried." When the monks carried a very small knife, it could not do anything. The Blessed One said: "Three kinds of knives should be carried: large, medium, and small. Among them, the large one is six fingers long, the small one is four fingers long, and the one in between is medium." The origin of the story is in Shravasti. When the monks' robes needed to be sewn, the monks sewed them with bamboo fragments and goose wings. Those things broke, and the Blessed One said: "A needle should be carried." A monk needed to sew his robe, so he borrowed a needle from a householder and sewed it. Then he returned the needle to the householder, and the householder said: "Venerable one, it is yours." "Good sir, the Blessed One does not allow it." When they said this, the monks informed the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: "Therefore, it is permitted for a monk to carry a needle." Do not hold needles made of crystal and glass, but hold these four kinds of needles, namely: those made of copper, brass, white copper, and iron. The Blessed One instructed that monks should hold these four kinds of needles. The monks placed them casually, causing them to rust. The Blessed One instructed: A needle case should be held. The monks did not know how to hold a needle case. The Blessed One instructed: There are two kinds of needle cases, namely tubular and container-like. The monks put an awl into a container-like needle case, and it broke. The Blessed One instructed: The awl should be made in two shapes, namely like a crow's beak and like a magpie's wing. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. The Blessed One instructed that monks should sew robes. When the monks stretched and sewed on the ground, the dust soiled the robes, and lice also made the robes unsuitable. The Blessed One instructed: Do not spread out and sew on the ground, but use frames. The monks did not know how to use frames. The Blessed One instructed: There are two kinds of frames, namely square frames made of wood and bamboo. The monks stretched them with stakes, and the frames broke. The Blessed One instructed: Holes should be made, and they should be stretched with ropes. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. The Blessed One instructed that there are three kinds of robes, namely large, medium, and small. If the frame used to stretch a large robe cannot be used to stretch a medium or small robe. The Blessed One instructed: Many frames should be made. Summary: Mirrors and water, as well as toothpicks and two bamboo combs. Hair knots and long hair, as well as foot warmers and large salt. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. The group of six monks, having put on their lower garments in the morning, and carrying their bowls and robes, went to Shravasti for alms. They saw Brahmins and householders placing cleaning utensils on the edges of their clothes, and the group of six monks
