Then he went and said, "Venerable sir, a Brahmin of the कौशिका (kauśika, Kaushika, of the Kaushika lineage) clan has come to the gate, and he wishes to see the Venerable One." He said, "Hey, gatekeeper, didn't I tell you before that if any beggars come, give them whatever they want and don't let them in? What's the use of him coming in? Give him whatever he wants and send him away. Venerable sir, I did as you said, but he said he didn't want anything else, he just wanted to see you." He said, "Hey, gatekeeper, go and let him in." The gatekeeper let him in. He said, "Householder, why are you hiding in the house of sorrow, leaning on a staff, and brooding in your heart?" The householder spoke in verse: "He who cannot dispel sorrow, one should not speak of sorrow to him. He who can dispel sorrow, one should speak of sorrow to him." Indra said, "Householder, tell me your sorrow, and I will dispel it for you." He told it in detail. Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, made the form of the Brahmin of the कौशिका (kauśika, Kaushika, of the Kaushika lineage) clan disappear, and sat down in his own form and said, "Householder, I will have the son of the gods, Sarvatraga, be your friend." And then he left. Then the Lord of the Gods, Indra, went into the midst of the thirty-three gods, and called the son of the gods, Sarvatraga, and said, "Son of the gods, Sarvatraga, go and be a friend to the innocent householder." He said, " कौशिका (kauśika, Kaushika, of the Kaushika lineage) is very good." The son of the gods, Sarvatraga, heard the words of the Lord of the Gods, Indra, and then manifested cities that were even more beautiful and excellent than that, and arranged the courtyards of the gods and the seats of the gods, and prepared the food of the gods. On the head of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Vipashyin, he placed the elephant king, the son of the earth protector, who had been used in the pleasure garden of the Lord of the Gods, Indra, to hold an umbrella with a hundred spokes. On the heads of the monks, he also placed other divine elephants to hold other umbrellas. To the perfectly enlightened Buddha Vipashyin, the Lord of the Gods

The consorts of Indra, the noble goddesses such as Delight, were made to fan with celestial fans made of gold and jewels. Also, other groups of celestial consorts were made to fan the monks with other fans. King Kinsman sent a clever man, instructing him: 'Go to the inner palace and observe how the householder Innocent is offering umbrellas and food to the Blessed One and the community of monks.' When he investigated, he saw such wealth and was greatly amazed, remaining there with a mind full of wonder. He sent ministers, and they also went and remained there. He sent young men, and they also went and remained there. Then, King Kinsman himself went there and stood at the door. The Perfectly Awakened Buddha, All-Seeing, said: 'Householder, you have spoken harsh words to King Kinsman, who has seen the truth. He is at this door, go and apologize to him.' He went to him, apologized, and said: 'Great King, please come in and make offerings from your own hands.' He went inside and saw the wealth of the gods, and was greatly amazed, saying: 'It is only you, householder, who can offer umbrellas to the Buddha and the community of monks. I cannot do it.' The householder Innocent, having satisfied the Perfectly Awakened Buddha, All-Seeing, with such wealth and food, prostrated at his feet and made this aspiration: 'By the root of virtue of having served such a field of merit, may I be born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family, and may I also experience the glory of gods and humans, obtain such Dharma, please such a teacher, and not displease him.' Monks, at that time, the householder Innocent was this householder Fire-born. Because that noble son spoke harsh words to King Kinsman, who had seen the truth, the ripening of that karma resulted in not obtaining for five hundred lifetimes...

I was burned together in a pyre, and now I am burned here again in a pyre. Having paid homage and made aspirations to the Tathagata Suvikrantadarsin (a past Buddha), by the ripening of that karma, I was born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. I also experienced the glory of gods and humans. And I also went forth in my doctrine, and having abandoned all defilements, I directly realized the state of an Arhat. I pleased the teacher who is equal in all aspects to the perfectly enlightened Buddha Suvikrantadarsin, equal in power, equal in strength, and equal in diligence, and I did not displease him. Monks, therefore, the ripening of deeds that are entirely dark is entirely dark, and the ripening of deeds that are entirely white is also white, and the ripening of mixed deeds is also mixed. Monks, therefore, having abandoned deeds that are entirely dark and mixed, you should strive to perform deeds that are entirely white. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. Having spoken thus, the monks greatly rejoiced in the words spoken by the Blessed One. Summary: The mending and use of bowls, knives, needles, needle cases, pegs, and many things, were permitted by the great sage. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. In Shravasti, a monk's bowl cracked, and he took it to a blacksmith, saying: Good sir, please mend this cracked bowl for me. The blacksmith thought: These people are making me work for nothing, they won't give me wages, I should delay it for a long time so that they will regret it and come back to take it themselves. So he said: Venerable, please go back and come tomorrow or the day after. Come in the morning, at noon, or in the afternoon. Thus he began to delay. That monk went there every day, and became weary. A friend of his saw him and asked: Long-lived one, you go there every day, is that your relative's house or a patron's house? He said: Long-lived one, that is neither my relative's house nor a patron's house.
