So it is. Then the nuns said: Holy mother, haven't you been harmed by stinginess towards laypeople? She said this. When they said this, those nuns with few desires rebuked her, and reported it to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, starting from "This happened," made it up to the establishment of the precept. Again, any nun who is stingy towards laypeople commits a downfall. Again, "any" refers to: Gross Delight Mother. "Towards laypeople" refers to: the homes of Brahmins and householders. "Stingy" refers to: generating jealousy. "Commits a downfall" refers to: the same as before. So, how does one commit a downfall? If a nun is even slightly stingy towards laypeople, she will completely commit a downfall. The fifth of the twentieth downfall is complete. The basis of the discussion is in Shravasti. Then, when Gross Delight Mother was teaching the nuns, (she thought) if those foolish Brahmins hit you with fists and slaps, and crack your heads, that would not be good. Don't go for alms too early. Thus she prevented others, but she herself put on her skirt very early at dawn, took her bowl and Dharma robes, and entered the village. A foolish Brahmin saw her, and that person grabbed her and beat her with fists and slaps, so that her eye sockets were bruised. After returning to the summer residence, the nuns said to her: Holy mother, who beat you? She explained the situation in detail. The nuns said to her: Holy mother, haven't you been harmed by stinginess towards gains? She said this. When they said this, the nuns reported it to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, starting from "This happened," made it up to the establishment of the precept. Again, any nun who is stingy towards gains commits a downfall. Again, "any nun" refers to: Gross Delight Mother. "Stingy towards gains" refers to: there are two kinds of gains: gains of food and gains of clothing. Here it refers to gains of food. Generating stinginess refers to: generating jealousy. Commits a downfall.

That which is called "as before." How does one become an occasion for falling? If a bhikṣuṇī is stingy with whatever small amount she obtains, then everything becomes an occasion for falling. Then, the previous connection: The bhikṣus became doubtful, and in order to cut off all doubts, they asked the Blessed One. Venerable Sthūlanandā only instructs others, but does not practice herself. The Blessed One said: Just as in the past, Sthūlanandā only instructed others, but did not practice herself, and therefore suffered unrighteous suffering. Bhikṣus, in the past, on a great road, many monkeys were passing by, and one of the monkeys said to the other monkeys: 'Brothers and sisters, you may become mad with bile disease, you should eat some sesame.' After instructing them in this way, she herself was eating sesame on the road where the cart was coming, and as a result, her head was cut off by the wheel of the cart. Then, a god at that time spoke in verse: One who only instructs others, but does not practice oneself, having a greedy nature, this monkey was crushed by the wheel. Bhikṣus, what do you think? That monkey was none other than Sthūlanandā herself. At that time, she also only instructed others, but did not practice herself, and therefore suffered unrighteous suffering. Now also, she only instructs others, but does not practice herself, and therefore suffers unrighteous suffering. Therefore, bhikṣus, one should train in this way: In whatever is harmonious, one should practice oneself and also instruct others. Bhikṣus, you should train in that way. The twenty-sixth of the occasions for falling is complete. The beginning is in Śrāvastī. There, Sthūlanandā lived together with others, and obtained the permission of the attendants. She said: 'Today, please temporarily put some food, such as brown sugar and pears, in my container.' They passed it back and forth, and did not give her permission. They said: 'Holy Mother, are you not stingy with the Dharma?' She said: 'Hey, daughters of leftover eaters, I...
