After praising the subjugation of spirits, he spoke thus: Eating together at an improper time is a cause for downfall. The proper times are: when sick, when working, when traveling, when on a boat, when in a large gathering, and when it is time for the food of ascetics. Eating together means eating inconsistently. Improper time means: for example, when sick, one cannot survive on just one type of food. Traveling time means: when a benefactor gives food on the road. Boat time means: when a benefactor gives alms upon boarding a boat. Large gathering means: food for many people gathered together. Ascetic's food time means: referring to non-Buddhist renunciates as ascetics. That time is the time means: that is the appropriate dharma. If asked: how does one fall into downfall at that time? If a bhikshuni, inside the boundary, with the perception of being inside the boundary, eats hard food together, she commits a downfall. Similarly, if she eats with doubt, she commits a downfall. If a bhikshuni, outside the boundary, with the perception of being inside the boundary, eats food together, she commits a minor offense. If she eats with doubt, she commits a minor offense. If the area of the bhikshuni's summer residence exists, and if some bhikshunis eat in the summer residence and some eat in the corridor, then those who eat in the summer residence should ask: is it covered with food? If they eat without asking, they will commit a downfall. Those who eat in the corridor will commit a minor offense. Similarly, the same should be said for residences and doorways. If it is covered with food, even a small amount of round water or a small amount of salt will not cause a downfall. The second part of the third downfall is complete. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. When the Blessed One established the precept against eating at improper times based on the seventeen schools, the twelve schools ate both at the proper time and at the improper time. The bhikshunis said: Did the Blessed One not establish the precept against eating at improper times? They established the precept for the bhikshus in this way, but not for the bhikshunis.

After saying this, when those nuns with few desires were scolding, they reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, starting from "This happened," made it up to the establishment of the precepts. Furthermore, any nun who eats or cooks food at the wrong time commits a downfall. Again, "any nun" refers to the twelve groups. As for "wrong time," there are two kinds of wrong time: wrong time, which is past noon; wrong time, which is before dawn. The so-called "food" refers to the five kinds of food and the five kinds of edibles. The so-called "cooking or eating" refers to swallowing secretly. The so-called "committing a downfall" is as mentioned above. So, how does one commit a downfall? If a nun cooks or eats thinking it is the wrong time, she commits a downfall. Similarly, if one eats with hesitation, one also commits a downfall. If a nun cooks or eats thinking it is the right time, she commits a minor offense. Similarly, if one eats with hesitation, one also commits a minor offense. The third part of the third downfall ends. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. When the Blessed One relied on black begging for a living and established the precepts regarding the storage of food, the twelve groups, through begging, took a portion of dry rice separately, and a portion of moist rice separately, and dried all the remaining food that had been enjoyed, and stored it after drying it. When there was a strong wind or a disaster, they soaked it in water and cooked it with fire, and then enjoyed it. When those nuns with few desires were scolding, they reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, starting from "This happened," made it up to the establishment of the precepts. Furthermore, any nun who cooks or eats stored food commits a downfall. Again, "any nun" refers to the twelve groups. As for "storage," there are two kinds of storage: accepting the previous food and storing the subsequent food; or accepting the subsequent food and storing it beyond the time. food
