The so-called "intermediate change of cold" means standing up and walking away. The so-called "taking it as a condition" means it is not something else. If one falls into transgression because of this, how does it happen? If a Bhikshuni knowingly knows that Bhikshunis have already sat down, and in order to harm others, says, "Go away, it's going to get cold," and then forcibly presses down and sits on the seat, then it will completely constitute a Patayantika. If one is sick, there is no Patayantika. If one is afraid, there is no Patayantika. The sixth of the second Patayantika is completed. The origin of the matter is in Shravasti. At that time, Thullananda and her retinue, while traveling in the countryside, went to Shravasti. Because in the Buddha's teachings, it is customary for Bhikshus and Bhikshunis to provide lodging. Later, when the summer residences of the Bhikshunis were being allocated, Thullananda received an upper room. Because she was not careful, she sat in the residence. When she sat down, the leg of the bed broke through the roof, and the leg of the bed fell down. There happened to be a Bhikshuni below, whose head was smashed. Those Bhikshunis with few desires began to scold her. The Bhikshunis told the Bhikshus, and the Bhikshus reported to the Buddha. After that, the Buddha, starting from "this happened," went all the way to establishing the precepts. Again, if a Bhikshuni, in an upper room, presses down on the legs of a bed or a small bed with the weight of her body, and lies down or sits, it constitutes a Patayantika. The so-called "which Bhikshuni" refers to Thullananda. The so-called "Sangha" refers to the Sangha of the Tathagata's Shravaka nuns. The so-called "Vihara" refers to a place that can accommodate the four postures. The so-called "upper" refers to the top of the roof. The so-called "room" refers to the residence. The so-called "leg arising" refers to the place where the leg appears. The so-called "sitting" refers to the act of sitting. The so-called "lying down" refers to the body leaning. If one falls into transgression because of this, how does it happen? If a Bhikshuni sits or lies down even slightly in the upper room, at the place where the legs of a bed or a small bed appear, then it will completely constitute a Patayantika. If it is covered with bricks, or covered with turf,

Or a wedge, or a wooden board, or covering with a small wooden board, or washing, or placing a footstool, then there is no offense. The seventh of the second defeat is complete. The origin is in Shravasti. At that time, the nun Thullananda was watering the grass with water containing living beings, and also watering the land and manure. To this, the nuns said, "Sister, do not water the grass or manure with water containing living beings." She said, "Are you going to count and give it to me? What harm is there in flowing into the great ocean of the east? What harm is there in flowing into the great ocean of the south, west, and north?" When those nuns of few desires rebuked her, they reported the matter to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, starting from "this happened," up to the establishment of the precept. If any nun, with water containing living beings, waters grass, manure, or land, or causes others to water, she commits an offense. "If any nun" refers to Thullananda. "With living beings" refers to living beings of two kinds: one that is visible to the naked eye, and the other that is imperceptible to the naked eye. "Water" refers to watering grass, land, manure, or fertilizer with water. "Watering" refers to doing it oneself. "Causing others to water" refers to having others do it. "Committing an offense" is as previously stated. How is an offense constituted? Regarding water containing living beings, recognizing it as water containing living beings, and watering or causing others to water, then one commits an offense. Similarly, acting with doubt also constitutes an offense. If a nun, regarding water without living beings, recognizes it as water containing living beings and waters or causes others to water, then she commits a misdeed. Similarly, acting with doubt also constitutes a misdeed. If a nun draws water into a field, then as many living beings as die there, she commits that many offenses; as many living beings as do not die, she commits that many misdeeds. Similarly, cutting off the water flow, destroying the field embankment, preventing or allowing the water flow, everything is as previously stated. The eighth of the second defeat is complete. Bhikshuni Vinaya Vibhanga, Volume Eighteen. The origin is in Shravasti.
