There is no transgression for being afflicted by illness. The third of the second transgression is complete. The story takes place in Shravasti. When the Blessed One saw many dwellings of monks without coverings, he established the basis of training. Those nuns who naturally resided there followed that basis of training. Then, twelve groups of nuns, without covering their dwellings, went outside the boundary. Then, those elder nuns said to those twelve groups of nuns: "Sisters, has the Blessed One not established a basis of training?" They replied, "The basis of training established by the Blessed One is for monks, not for nuns." When they said this, the nuns spoke to the monks, and the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: "The basis of training that I have established is common to both." The Blessed One established that dwellings should not be placed without coverings in this way. Then, at another time, the nuns, together with like-minded companions, went to a certain mountain. They found dwellings in that monastery, and when they were establishing dwellings during the day, they separated from their like-minded companions and went alone, and as a result, they were robbed by thieves. The nuns reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: "One should entrust and then go." Not understanding what the Blessed One said, the Blessed One said: "If residing in a monastery, one should entrust to a monk; if residing in a summer dwelling, one should entrust to a nun." When they entrusted to those people, they were still obstructed. The Blessed One said: "There are five ways of entrusting a dwelling. What are the five? That is, saying 'This is a monastery,' saying 'Look after the monastery,' saying 'This is a dwelling,' saying 'Look after the dwelling,' and the locking of the door itself is the fifth. Having done so, one should then walk underneath it." Then, the Blessed One

The Venerable (translated: Danne) declared the precepts to the nuns, and praised the respect for the precepts, and then said: If any bhikkhuni knowingly, regarding the Sangha's bed or small bed, or cushion with filling, or cotton, or pillow, or square mat, after laying it out, does not put it away, or does not have it put away, or does not entrust it to another bhikkhuni, and sleeps under it, unless there is a special reason, she commits a Patayantika offense. Furthermore, "bhikkhuni" refers to this Dharma. "Sangha" refers to the Sangha of the Tathagata's female disciples. "Monastery" refers to the place that can accommodate the four postures. "Bed" refers to the place for sleeping. "Small bed" refers to the place for sitting. "Cushion with filling" refers to the cushion with wood cotton. "Cotton" refers to cotton. "Pillow" refers to what is used as a pillow. "Square mat" refers to the square mat. "Without cover" refers to the open space. "Laying out" refers to laying out oneself. "Having someone lay out" refers to having others lay out. "Not putting away" refers to not putting away oneself. "Not having someone put away" refers to not having others put away. "Sleeping under it" refers to staying away from the vicinity. How far is the vicinity of the dwelling? The Blessed One said, forty-nine cubits. If it causes damage, it is a Patayantika offense. If it does not cause damage, it is a Dukkata offense. In the presence of the Buddha, the Blessed One, the Venerable Ananda asked, "Venerable, how many situations are there where the dwelling is damaged?" Ananda replied, "There are two. Which two? Damage caused by rain and damage caused by wind." What is damage caused by rain? Ananda, if the rain makes both layers of the dwelling wet, it is a Patayantika offense. If it does not get wet, it is a Dukkata offense. This is called damage caused by rain. If the wind turns both layers over, it is a Patayantika offense. If it does not turn over, it is a Dukkata offense. If one remembers while walking on the road, one should make this aspiration, and say, "I have placed the dwelling in such a place, together with the Brahmacharis, it is called asceticism, and that Patayantika offense should also be confessed according to the Dharma." If one sees a bhikkhuni on the road, one should at least greet her, and so on.

Furthermore, if there is a matter of expulsion, it should be carried out according to the Dharma. The phrase "without entrusting it to a place where there is a Bhikshuni" refers to any Bhikshuni who is present there. The phrase "except in such a case" refers to any situation that endangers life. The phrase "commits an offense" is as previously stated. If asked, how does one commit an offense? If a Bhikshuni, even slightly, in a Sangha monastery, lays out a bed, a small bed, or a cushion with padding, etc., belonging to the Sangha, or a dwelling place without covering, or leaves without gathering up what has been placed, or without having it gathered up, then in all cases, she commits an offense. If a Bhikshuni lays out or places a dwelling place without covering in a Sangha monastery, and after entering the monastery, does not place mindfulness nearby, or does not place the mind in equanimity, or does not cause the mind to be liberated, and thus dwells inwardly, if greed arises in the middle of the first watch of the night, she commits an offense. If greed does not arise, she commits a wrong action. Likewise, if greed arises in the first watch of the night, she commits an offense. If greed does not arise, she commits a wrong action. Likewise, if greed arises in the middle of the middle watch of the night, she commits an offense. If greed does not arise, she commits a wrong action. Likewise, if greed arises in the middle watch of the night, she commits an offense. If greed does not arise, she commits a wrong action. Likewise, if greed arises in the middle of the last watch of the night, she commits an offense. If greed does not arise, she commits a wrong action. Likewise, if greed arises in the last watch of the night, she commits an offense. If greed does not arise, she commits a wrong action. Likewise, if greed arises at the time of the first appearance of dawn, she commits an offense. If greed does not arise, she commits a wrong action. Likewise, at the time of the complete appearance of dawn, and at the time when the elephant is led out, and after the elephant is led out, and when the night has passed, and at dawn, and at sunrise, and in the morning, and before noon, and at noon, and in the afternoon, if greed arises, she commits an offense.
