And, after the nuns were harassed by thieves, because the nuns were harassed by thieves, the Blessed One permitted it. After many steadfast and abiding nuns heard this, they went to where the Blessed One was and, bowing their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, many steadfast and abiding nuns said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, how should we act regarding this basis of training? Then, the Blessed One praised the nuns for wanting to learn, respecting learning, and extolling the virtues of frugal use, and then instructed the nuns' sangha: Furthermore, any nun who goes to a householder or the wife of a householder who is not a relative to ask for robes, except for the proper time; if it exceeds that time, it is an offense entailing forfeiture. The proper time is this: if a nun's robes are robbed, lost, burned, or carried away by water, she may go to a householder or the wife of a householder who is not a relative and ask for robes; that is the proper time. Furthermore, "any nun" means one who believes in this Dharma. "Not a relative" means that up to seven generations from the maternal grandmother and grandfather are relatives, but beyond that they are not relatives. "Householder" means a man. "Wife of a householder" means a woman. "Goes" means having gone. "Asks" means, except for the proper time, whether one asks oneself or has another ask. "The proper time is this" means that this is in accordance with the Dharma. "Robes are robbed" means that the robes are robbed by thieves or deceivers. "Robes are lost" means that the robes are lost or strayed. "Robes are carried away by water" means that the robes are carried away by water. "Robes are burned" means that the robes are burned by fire. "An offense entailing forfeiture" and so on, should be explained extensively. Then, how does one incur an offense? It is judged from the value, color, and size. How is it judged from the value? Furthermore, any nun who goes to a householder
