It should be abandoned. Virtuous Dharmas should increase, and it should be known that they do not diminish. The virtuous aspect increases, it does not diminish. Saying 'to that bhikshuni' means to the fat joyful woman. Saying 'by the bhikshunis' means by these Dharma holders. 'It should be said thus' means to instruct as previously instructed. If that basis is abandoned, that is good, that is good. If it is not abandoned, in order to abandon that basis, it should be truthfully instructed two or three times, and truthfully taught. It is like instructing with the request and the four karmas as before. How does one fall into transgression in that case? As long as a bhikshuni dwells mixed with other bhikshunis, and knowing that they are indulging in frivolity, play, and coarse bodily actions, if she says to those bhikshunis, 'Do not dwell separately, you dwell mixed together,' then all will become misdeeds. In the Bhikshuni Pratimoksha, the sixteenth Sanghavasesha is complete. The Blessed One was dwelling in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrels' Sanctuary, in Rajagriha. At that time, there was a terrible famine, and it was difficult for monks to obtain alms. A certain monk who had attained magical powers, whose name was Jambuka, went to Jambudvipa, which was known there. He filled his bowl with the fruits of the Jambuka tree, which had color, fragrance, and taste, and brought them back, enjoying them himself and distributing them to those who were skilled in practicing Brahmacharya. Just as with the fruits of the Jambuka tree, he also filled his bowl with the fruits of the Bilva tree, the Emblic myrobalan, and the Kapittha, and brought them back, enjoying them himself and distributing them to those who were skilled in practicing Brahmacharya. Similarly, he also went among the gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings, and also went among the gods of the Thirty-three, and filled his bowl with nectar, and brought it back, enjoying it himself and distributing it to those who were skilled in practicing Brahmacharya. Similarly, he also went to the northern gate

Having gone to the continent called 'Unpleasant Sound,' he filled his bowl with grains of rice that were neither plowed nor sown, and he himself fully enjoyed it. He also distributed it to those who practiced like Brahma. Similarly, after going to the Eastern Videha and the Western Godaniya, he went to those places that were prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, had good harvests, and were filled with people and many inhabitants. He filled his bowl with clean and blessed food and drink, possessing color, smell, and taste, and he himself fully enjoyed it. He also distributed it to those who practiced like Brahma. Then, Devadatta thought to himself: 'In such an unbearable famine, it is difficult for the monks in the monastery to find food.' Again, Devadatta thought to himself: 'I will also attain miraculous powers, and I will go to the place called Jambudvipa, which is known as Jambudvipa. I will fill my bowl with the ears of the Jambudvipa tree, which possess color, smell, and taste, and I will take them. I will fully enjoy them myself, and I will distribute them to the wise who practice like Brahma.' Similarly, he went to those places that were prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, had good harvests, and were filled with people and many inhabitants. He filled his bowl with clean and blessed food and drink, possessing color, smell, and taste, and he took them. He would fully enjoy them himself, and he would distribute them to the wise who practiced like Brahma. Devadatta again thought: 'I will go to where the Blessed One is.' Then, Devadatta went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, Devadatta said this to the Blessed One: 'Blessed One, please show me the path of miraculous powers. Sugata, please show me the path of miraculous powers.' Then, the Blessed One, understanding that Devadatta desired sinful miraculous powers, said this to Devadatta: 'Devadatta, for the time being, strive for higher discipline.'

Do it, and you will have magical powers, and other things as well. Strive for higher mind and higher wisdom, and you will have magical powers, and other things as well. Then Devadatta thought to himself: The Blessed One is not showing me the path to magical powers. Realizing this, Devadatta went to the venerable Ajnata Kaundinya, and having arrived, he said these words to Ajnata Kaundinya: Venerable one, please show me the path to magical powers. Then, the venerable Ajnata Kaundinya, having observed the mind of the Blessed One, and realizing that his desire was evil, said these words to Devadatta: Devadatta, properly attend to the form aggregate, and you will have magical powers, and other things as well. Properly attend to the consciousness aggregate, and you will have magical powers, and other things as well. From "Devadatta obtained magical powers from Kashyapa, who possessed the ten powers, and he could transform one into many" to the end. After a while, such an evil desire arose in that person whose mind was completely occupied: Now the Blessed One is old and frail, and his teachings to the four assemblies are lax, alas, if the Blessed One would entrust the monastic community of monks to me, and I would guide the monastic community of monks, while the Blessed One would abide in the bliss of meditative absorption in the visible Dharma, and rest a little, how wonderful that would be! When Devadatta went to where the Blessed One was, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and said these words to the Blessed One: Blessed One, now you are old and frail... abiding in the bliss of meditative absorption in the visible Dharma... until the end. When he had thus reported, the Blessed One said these words to Devadatta: Foolish man, even to those who practice the pure life, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, I would not entrust the monastic community of monks, let alone to you, a saliva-drinker! Having spoken thus, Devadatta became angry.
