Having done wrong, and not displeasing, abiding in whatever celibacy is, and by the ripening of the karma of fully practicing it, one attains the state of an Arhat. In that scripture, whichever Bhikshuni ordains in front of whom, the Blessed One Kashyapa said that she was the foremost of those with quick understanding. At that time, she also made the aspiration: "Just as the Blessed One Kashyapa said that my preceptor was the foremost of those with quick understanding, when the Brahmin boy attains the supreme perfect enlightenment, may I also be said to be the foremost of those with quick understanding." From "Bhikshus, thus should you train" to the end. Also, Bhikshus, having arisen in doubt, from "What karma did the venerable Maha-Kashyapa do and accumulate, that by the ripening of such karma, he was born into a wealthy and prosperous family, and his wealth was such that he had thirty border villages" to "eighty containers filled with golden barley, and nine hundred and ninety-nine plows" to the end. Bhikshus, you should extensively explain what karma this person did and accumulated. Bhikshus, in the past, in a past time, five hundred sages lived in a certain dwelling place. At that time when the Buddha, the Blessed One, had not appeared in the world, self-enlightened Buddhas who aided the poor and the inferior appeared in the world. Not very far from that dwelling place, a self-enlightened Buddha also lived. Then those sages would get up early every day, leave a sage to guard the dwelling place, and go in four directions for firewood and fruit. Then one of the sages repeatedly went near that self-enlightened Buddha, and saw that self-enlightened Buddha sitting in the lotus position. When returning, he also saw him sitting in the same way, and thought: "If this Bhikshu does not break the lotus position during the day, then where does he get food, and how does he do it? I will ask him." He also thought: "If I go near and ask now, those sages will see me associating with a Bhikshu and will mock me."

Then, he thought: When it's my turn to guard the dwelling, I will ask him without hesitation. Later, another time it was his turn to guard the dwelling, those hermits came and went to where the Pratyekabuddha was, and asked him: Noble one, we go back and forth every day for food and fruit, but I have never seen you break your lotus position, or go out for alms, do you eat joy? He replied: I do not eat joy, but when it is time to eat, I go out for alms, bring it here and eat. He asked: Where do you go for alms? He replied: To the north where the sound is unpleasant. What is the unpleasant sound like? He replied: I have no complete attachment, extremely peaceful, going to a superior place, and even after death, I will be reborn in a superior place. If I do not go to the north where the sound is unpleasant, I will beg for food among the gods of the Thirty-three Heavens. He asked: What are the gods of the Thirty-three Heavens like? He replied: They have color, much happiness, tall palaces, long life, long duration, and long existence. He thought: This is a great being, I should offer alms today, so he thought, he said to that Pratyekabuddha: Noble one, today I will offer alms, please accept them. He said: Since you have already renounced the household life, how do you intend to give alms to me? He said: Although that is so, please be sure to bestow your favor on me. You are auspiciousness and merit, you are the best of the Dharma preachers, your diligence makes this world, as if it were completely decorated. He also agreed. After that, the hermit knew that he had agreed because he said nothing, and returned to his dwelling. There, he had also prepared a small handful of barnyard millet beforehand, washed it clean, and went to a cowshed not far from that dwelling.

Then, having taken milk and boiled it in the milk, once it was boiled, he offered alms to that Pratyekabuddha. Monks, he also, in order to benefit him, accepted that alms, and in order to teach the Dharma with his body, rose into the middle of the sky like a swan king spreading its wings. Having seen that, he became extremely devoted, and with a mind of joy, satisfaction, and delight, knelt on the ground and made the following aspiration: By this offering of alms and the complete giving of the Dharma, may I never be born in the hells, as animals, or as hungry ghosts! May I always be born among the gods, and even after dying from there, may I be born in Uttarakuru, and even from there, may I again be born among the gods, and may I also comprehend those collections of qualities that have been realized by this, and may I please a teacher who is far superior to this, and may I not displease him! Thus he did. Monks! The one who became a sage at that time and at that moment is this Mahakashyapa. At that time and at that moment, as a result of the ripening of the karma of offering that small amount of millet, he was born thousands of times in Uttarakuru. He was born thousands of times among the gods. Having died from the gods, he was also born into a Brahmin family. By the power of aspiration, I pleased a teacher who was far superior to hundreds of thousands of millions of Pratyekabuddhas, and I also obtained that collection of qualities. Monks, therefore, one should respect the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha, and one should give alms and do meritorious deeds. If one does so, one will become a possessor of such a collection of qualities as Mahakashyapa, and monks, you should learn in this way. Furthermore, the monks became doubtful and inquired of the Blessed One: Blessed One, what deeds did the venerable Mahakashyapa do and what ripening of karma did he accumulate, that he thus renounced, abandoned all defilements, and attained the state of an Arhat, and that the Blessed One praises him as being of few desires, content, and possessing pure qualities?
