Having the ability, but not making it calm, one commits a downfall. Furthermore, what is called "furthermore"? It is Sthūlanandā. Having the ability, is called "having ability." Fighting is called "revealing faults." Making it calm is called "completely calming." Not making it calm is called "not preventing." Committing a downfall is as before. So, how does one commit a downfall? If a bhikṣuṇī has the ability to calm even a slight quarrel and revealing of faults, but does not make it calm, then in all cases, one commits a downfall. The first of the twenty-third downfall is complete. The setting is in Śrāvastī. Then, Sthūlanandā closed the door of the rainy season dwelling, took the key, and went out for a stroll. As a result, the rainy season dwelling caught fire. The bhikṣuṇīs wanted to extinguish the fire, but could not find the key to open the door, and it was burned by the fire. At that time, some bhikṣuṇīs with few desires began to reproach her. This matter was reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, starting from "this happened," made the precepts up to the establishment of the training. Furthermore, any bhikṣuṇī who goes out for a stroll without entrusting the rainy season dwelling commits a downfall. Furthermore, what is called "furthermore"? It is Sthūlanandā. Rainy season dwelling is the monastery. Without entrusting, is without entrusting the key to the bhikṣuṇīs. Going out for a stroll is going outside the boundary. Committing a downfall is as before. So, how does one commit a downfall? If a bhikṣuṇī is within the boundary, perceiving it to be within the boundary, and goes outside the boundary without entrusting the key to the bhikṣuṇīs, one commits a downfall. Similarly, having doubt also commits a downfall. If a bhikṣuṇī is outside the boundary, perceiving it to be within the boundary, and goes outside the boundary without entrusting the key to the bhikṣuṇīs, one commits a misdeed. Similarly, having doubt also commits a misdeed. The second of the twenty-third downfall is complete. The setting is in Śrāvastī. Then, Sthūlanandā, because of lust, desired a man, so she went to the residence of a merchant's son, and after arriving, she said these words: "Handsome face, slightly knowledgeable."

Or, she said this and recited. Sthūlanandā said, say this and come out, recite. She said, Siri Phu, Biri Bu, Siri Bi Svāhā. Sthūlanandā said, say it again and again. After a while, she got angry and scolded, "Bald-headed bad fellow." The nun who followed her said, "If you can't even remember two words, how can you hold the three pitakas?" She said, "I have already remembered the first word, but I just want to make the word my own." The nun who followed her said, "Holy mother, it is amazing that you are burning with desire." When she said that, the nuns reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, from this incident, made the precepts. Furthermore, if any nun learns mantras from a householder, she commits a downfall. Again, "any" refers to Sthūlanandā. "From a householder" means from someone living at home. "Mantras" means to eliminate. "Learning" means to fully understand. "Committing a downfall" means the same as above. So, how does one commit a downfall? As long as a nun learns even a little mantra from a householder, she completely commits a downfall. The third part of the twenty-third downfall is complete. The basis of the story is in Śrāvastī. Then, Sthūlanandā had a man recite a mantra, saying, "Hey, you inside, Siri Phu, Biri Bu, Siri Bi Svāhā, recite." She said this two or three times. Then that man said, "Holy mother, I have completely remembered it." Sthūlanandā said again and again, "Recite." Then that man got angry and said, "Bald-headed bad woman, it's better not to even look at you, the mantra is also used up." The nun who followed her said, "Holy mother, why are you doing that?" Sthūlanandā said, "I want to make this word my own." The nun who followed her said, "Holy mother, don't be
