While making (this rule), when those nuns with few desires were scolding, they reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, starting from "This happened," made (the rule) up to the establishment of the precept. Furthermore, if any nun digs earth or causes (someone) to dig, it is a downfall. Again, "any" refers to the twelve divisions. From the word "earth," there are two: naturally occurring and not naturally occurring. Among these, "naturally occurring" refers to when the earth has become damp for three months during the rainy season; this is called naturally occurring earth. What is earth that is not naturally occurring? It is when rain has not fallen, and the earth has not become damp; this is called earth that is not naturally occurring. "Digs" means by oneself. "Causes to dig" means by another. "It is a downfall" means as before. So, how does it become a downfall? If a nun digs naturally occurring earth, while digging, she commits a downfall. If she digs earth that is not naturally occurring, she commits a wrong action. If a nun drives a stake into the earth, she commits a downfall. If she pulls it out, she commits a wrong action. If a nun prevents the oozing of earth, if the element of earth is very abundant and the oozing of earth is very thin, she commits a downfall. If the element of oozing earth is very thick and the element of earth is very thin, she commits a wrong action. Similarly, if the heavy substance is very abundant and the element of earth or sand is very little, she commits a wrong action. If a nun prevents the oozing of sand in the earth, if the element of earth is very thick and the element of sand is very thin, she commits a downfall. If the element of sand is very abundant and the element of earth is very thin, she commits a wrong action. If she causes an unfinished embankment to collapse, she commits a downfall. If it is finished, she commits a wrong action. If she destroys an unfinished wall, she commits a downfall. If it is finished, she commits a wrong action. If she drives a stake into a wall, she commits a downfall. If she pulls it out, she commits a wrong action. If she prevents an unfinished wall surface, she commits a downfall. If it is finished, she commits a wrong action. Even if she splits a clod of earth, she commits a wrong action. If she drives a stake or a small stake into muddy ground, she commits a wrong action. If she stirs it up, she commits a wrong action. If she drives a stake into the mark of an old stake, she commits a wrong action. If she draws a line on the earth, she commits a wrong action. If she calculates the loss by hand, there is no downfall. The sixth downfall is complete.

The third ends. The incident occurred in Shravasti. At the time when the Blessed One, relying on the Six Groups, established the basis of precepts for being invited for four months, the Twelve Groups also claimed as their own the invitations for five and six months, and then the nuns said to them: "Didn't the Blessed One establish the basis of precepts for four months?" They said, "That was established for the monks, not for the nuns." At that time, they reported to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, from this incident until the establishment of the precepts, said, "A nun should claim as her own what she has been invited for four months. If she goes beyond that, except for a valid reason, it is a downfall." This is a valid reason: being invited separately, being invited again and again, being invited especially, and being invited constantly. "Four months" means four months. "Invited especially beyond that" means seeking an invitation. "Except for a valid reason" means setting a time. "Separately" means differently. "Again and again" means repeatedly. "Especially" means sufficiently. "Constantly" means continuously. "This is a valid reason" means this is a Dharma that is in accordance. "It is a downfall" is the same as before. How does it become a downfall? If a nun is invited to a householder's house for vegetable dishes and asks for broth, it is a downfall. Similarly, if invited by a common person and asks for merit, it becomes a downfall in all cases. Up to that point. Regarding merit, if one asks for common things, it is a minor offense. If one is sick, or has obtained merit, and asks for common things, or is entrusted, there is no downfall. The fourth of the sixth downfall is completed. The incident occurred in Shravasti. The Blessed One established some precepts that are common to monks, some that are common to nuns, and some that are common to both, so at that time
