The third chapter ends. The beginning is in Shravasti. When the Blessed One, relying on the black dawn, established the foundation of the precepts regarding the storage of food, at that time, the twelve groups, relying on alms, would take a portion of dry rice separately, and also take a portion of wet rice separately, and dry all the leftovers that had been used. They would dry them and store them. When a wind disease occurred or a bad environment appeared, they would soak them in water, cook them with fire, and then consume them. Those nuns with few desires would condemn this and report it to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, starting from "This happened," proceeded to establish the precepts. Furthermore, if any nun violates the rule of storing food, and cooks or eats the stored food, she commits a downfall. Again, "any nun" refers to the twelve groups. "Storage" refers to two situations: first, accepting food and then storing it; second, accepting food and then storing it beyond the time limit. "Cooking and eating" is the same as before. "Downfall" means "leading to downfall," the same as before. So, how does it lead to downfall? If a nun perceives stored food as stored, she commits a downfall. If she perceives non-stored food as stored, she commits a minor offense. Similarly, if she eats with doubt, she commits a minor offense. If she stores clothes, she commits a downfall. If she stores a bowl, she commits a downfall. If she stores a water pot, she commits a downfall. If she stores a door latch, she commits a minor offense. If she stores a crooked key, she commits a minor offense. If she stores a door bolt, she commits a minor offense. The fourth part of the third downfall ends. The beginning is in Shravasti. When the Blessed One, relying on the black great monk who lived in all the cemeteries, established the foundation of the precepts regarding accepting what is given, at that time, those nuns did not know what is giving and what is not giving.
