Taking even a little bit more than that will lead to downfall in all cases. The first part of the third downfall ends. The setting is in Rajagriha (རྒྱལ་པོའི་ཁབ་ན, capital of Magadha in the 6th century BCE, near Patna, Bihar, India today). At that time, the Blessed One, because of Devadatta (ལྷ་སྦྱིན), forbade the Sangha from gathering and eating. Then, those bhikkhunis considered it a common rule for both and followed it. Later, they became ill and could not survive on a single meal. The Blessed One instructed: Being sick is a time, so it can be eaten. Similarly, when someone traveling on the road feels hungry and cannot perform virtuous deeds, from "...cannot perform virtuous deeds" to "can be eaten" is also the case. Similarly, when working, and when on a boat, it can also be eaten. Similarly, when food is obtained when many people gather, the Blessed One instructed: It can be eaten. Similarly, for wandering ascetics or female wandering ascetics, if they have faith in the Buddha's teachings and obtain food, it can also be eaten. Because the bhikkhunis considered it rare for wandering ascetics to have faith in the Buddha's teachings and obtain food. Then, the Blessed One praised the bhikkhunis who wanted to learn, respected learning, and reduced their learning supplies, and instructed as follows: Gathering and eating at the wrong time is a cause of downfall. The times are: being sick, working, traveling, being on a boat, gathering in large numbers, and the time for food for non-Buddhist practitioners. Gathering and eating means eating inconsistently. Not being the time means like being sick and unable to survive on a single meal. The time for the road means when a donor gives food to someone traveling on the road. Being on a boat means when a donor gives alms when boarding a boat. Gathering in large numbers means food when many people gather. The time for food for non-Buddhist practitioners means calling non-Buddhist renunciates practitioners. That time is the time means that it is a suitable dharma. If that would lead to downfall? If a bhikkhuni is within the boundary and thinks she is within the boundary, gathering and eating food will lead to downfall.

If one eats with doubt, it is a downfall. If a bhikshuni is outside the boundary but thinks she is inside the boundary, and gathers and eats food, she commits a misdeed. If one eats with doubt, it is a misdeed. If the bhikshunis have a foundation for their summer residence, and if some bhikshunis eat in the summer residence and some eat in the courtyard, then those who eat in the summer residence should write: "Has it been sealed with food?" If one eats without asking, it will be a downfall. Those who eat in the courtyard will commit a misdeed. Similarly, it should be said for dwellings and gatehouses, etc. If it has been sealed with food, even if it is a small amount of water with medicine or salt water, there is no downfall. The second part of the third downfall is complete. The beginning is in Shravasti. When the Blessed One, relying on the seventeen groups, established the precept of untimely food, the twelve groups ate both at the proper time and at the improper time. The bhikshunis said: "Did the Blessed One not establish the precept of untimely food?" They said to the bhikshus: "He established the precept for the bhikshus, but not for the bhikshunis." Therefore, when those bhikshunis with few desires rebuked them, they reported it to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, from "This happened" to establishing the precept. Again, if any bhikshuni eats food at an improper time, or prepares or eats, it is a downfall. Again, "which bhikshuni" refers to the twelve groups. "Improper time" means there are two improper times: the improper time after noon, and the improper time before dawn. "Preparing and eating" refers to the five preparations and the five foods. "Prepares or eats" means swallowing secretly. "Downfall" is the same as before. So, how does one commit a downfall? If a bhikshuni thinks that an improper time is an improper time, and then prepares or eats, she commits a downfall. Similarly, if one eats with doubt, it is a downfall. If a bhikshuni thinks that the time is an improper time, and then prepares or eats, she commits a misdeed. Similarly, if one eats with doubt, it is a misdeed. The third downfa
