Thus, they said, "The basis for establishing the precepts is for the monks, not for the nuns." When (some) nuns were being scolded, the nuns spoke to the monks, and the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, starting from "This happened," proceeded to establish the precepts. Furthermore, any nun who lays down a grass mat or a leaf mat in the monastery of the Sangha, or has someone lay it down and does not gather it up, or does not have someone gather it up, and leaves without entrusting it to a nun who is present, in such a case, except for a reason, it is a downfall. Again, "any nun" is the same as what was said before. The so-called "grass mat," grass is grass itself. The so-called "leaves," leaves are leaves themselves. The so-called "laying down," is laying it down oneself. The so-called "having someone lay it down," is having someone else lay it down. The so-called "not gathering it up," is not gathering it up oneself. The so-called "not having someone gather it up," is not having someone else gather it up. The so-called "leaving," is leaving the vicinity. What is the vicinity of the mat? The Blessed One said: forty cubits and nine fingers. If it is damaged, it is a downfall. If it is not damaged, it is a misdeed. The attendant asked: How many ways are there for a mat to be damaged? There are two kinds of damage: damage by wind and damage by insects. What is damage by wind? If the wind turns the mat over two layers, it is a downfall. If it does not turn it over, it is a misdeed. This is called damage by wind. What is damage by insects? If insects bite through the mat two layers, if they bite through, it is a downfall. If they do not bite through, it is a misdeed. When walking on the road, if one remembers, it should be explained in detail as with a dwelling. The so-called "downfall" is the same as what was said before. So, how does one incur a downfall? Any nun who lays down a grass mat or a leaf mat in the monastery of the Sangha, or has someone lay it down and does not gather it up, or does not have someone gather it up, as long as she leaves the vicinity, everything is (a downfall).
