They act. Having heard from this side, they speak to that side; having heard from that side, they speak to this side. Those who are separated and become two sides suffer each other, and unpleasantness arises. Recitation, reading, oral recitation, yoga, attention, and even abandoning the inner mind with calm abiding, while dwelling, those nuns with few desires rebuke at that time. The nuns spoke to the monks, and the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One instructed the nuns: Nuns, do not engage in divisive speech with each other. Why is that? Nuns, in the past, there was a pregnant lioness in a dense forest. Their nature is that my cub must not drink milk, or if it is hungry, in order to make that into food, they gather meat and follow. They killed a cow and followed. That cow also had a calf, which was drinking the milk of that lioness, until here. When both grew up, that was also the time of death, until it was said: There are many things that create discord, it was completely narrated, until here. A fox separated the two, until it was said: Those two also took each other's lives, until here. When the god spoke in verse: From associating with wicked people, one will not see goodness. Look at the fox separating friendship from the lion's pack. Nuns, for a while, even those beings who have taken birth as animals act with divisive speech. When they deceive each other, what need is there to mention that women are especially prone to anger? Therefore, this previous story should be told in detail. Another previous story is: Nuns, in the past, there was a lioness who had given birth to a cub not long ago. The mother went to a place to find food, hungry and tired, not far from it, a tigress followed. As it wandered, it met a tigress and began to nurse, until it said: They lived in one place.

That's the end of it. Among them, the lion's name is Sharp Tooth. The tiger's name is Strong Arm. From here, a fox began to create division between the two of them. Then the lion spoke in verse: Abundant in water, endowed with skill and strength, it is not good for the Strong Arm to fight against the Sharp Tooth. The Strong Arm said: Abundant in water, endowed with skill and strength, it is not good for the Sharp Tooth to fight against the Strong Arm. After the two of them questioned each other, it ended with the killing of the fox. At this time, the deity spoke in verse: Do not abandon friends because of the words of others, but examine what others have said. Those who want to create division will look for opportunities, so do not trust those who gossip. The gossiper who separates friends, the lying fox, born in the village, this corpse, is happy to be killed. Bhikshunis, not to mention those beings who have been reborn into the animal realm, who constantly use divisive speech with each other, and dwell in suffering and many unpleasant things, what need is there to mention women who are particularly prone to anger? Bhikshunis, therefore, one should not use divisive speech. If one uses it, one commits an offense entailing expiation. Then, the Blessed One, starting from this event, made the establishment of the precept, that if a bhikshuni speaks divisive speech, she commits an offense entailing expiation. From whoever has the intention of divisive speech, to speech and words, it is the same as before. 'Commits an offense entailing expiation' means causing downfall, it is the same as before. So, how does one commit an offense entailing expiation? A bhikshuni goes to someone who has ordained from the Brahmin caste and says this: 'Noble one, what use do you have for the monastic conduct and pure conduct of such and such a bhikshuni? You are someone who has ordained from the Brahmin caste.' Saying this and proclaiming their lineage is a minor offense. Proclaiming their clan is also a minor offense. Similarly, from someone who has ordained from the Kshatriya caste, to committing a minor offense.

Likewise, from "ordained from the Vaishya caste" to "commits a downfall." Likewise, from "ordained from the Shudra caste" to "commits a downfall." This is called caste. A bhikshuni goes to a bhikshuni ordained from the Brahmin caste and says this: "Venerable Mother, a certain bhikshuni says to you: 'What do you do with the conduct of a renunciate and the conduct of Brahma? You are ordained from the Brahmin caste, so you must study your own doctrine.'" Saying this and proclaiming a craft, she commits a misdeed. Likewise, from "ordained from the Kshatriya caste" to "commits a misdeed." Likewise, from "ordained from the Vaishya caste" to "commits a downfall." Likewise, from "ordained from the Shudra caste" to "commits a downfall." Thus, the intermediate summary should be explained in detail as described above. Among them, painters and carpenters, blacksmiths and shoemakers, potters, barbers, woodworkers, bamboo workers, and maids. This is called craft. A bhikshuni goes to a bhikshuni ordained from the Brahmin caste and says this: "Venerable Mother, a certain bhikshuni says to you: 'What do you do with the conduct of a renunciate and the conduct of Brahma? At that time, the dispute of the twelve groups of monks approached.
