The twenty-second pācittiya of the nuns is complete. The topic is in Śrāvastī. At that time, Bhadda Kāpilānī did not lift the hard covering when it was time to lift the hard covering, and the nuns said this to her: Holy mother, the time to lift the hard covering has come, why do you not lift the hard covering? She said this: I am a holder of the three baskets, so I know the time to lift the hard covering. Then, those nuns missed the time to lift the hard covering, and wandered in the fields wearing their upper and lower garments. Those nuns asked: Sisters, why have you missed the time to lift the hard covering, and are wandering in the fields wearing your upper and lower garments? They said this: Holy mother Bhadda Kāpilānī said: I am a holder of the three baskets. Saying this, she has not yet lifted the hard covering. Hearing this, the nuns with few desires began to scold, until the precepts were established. Again, if any nun does not lift the hard covering in due time, she commits a nissaggiya pācittiya. Again, which nun, refers to Bhadda Kāpilānī. Due time, refers to lifting the hard covering on the last day of the first month of spring. Nissaggiya pācittiya, refers to the same as before. Then, how does one commit a transgression? As long as the nun does not lift the hard covering in due time, she commits a nissaggiya pācittiya in its entirety. The twenty-third nissaggiya pācittiya is complete. Summary: The one with obvious signs and each, That is repeatedly released and, For the sake of clothing, Obtaining other objects and, Dwelling and summer house and, Obtaining for the sake of many people and, Begging for the sake of the Sangha and, Heavy and of great value and, The light one is the last. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park, in the grove of Prince Jeta. At that time, there was a goldsmith in Śrāvastī who took a wife from the same caste. Then, because he was a miser, wanting to test his new wife, he placed a gold earring and sat alone. Then, Bhadda Kāpilānī put on her lower garment in the morning, took her bowl and robes, and went to the goldsmith's house, and when she arrived,

Then he said, "May that beggar woman be free from illness." Having said this, he spoke these words: "Beautiful woman, please give alms." She took out some food powder, and seeing the food powder, she said, "It is not good for me to receive food powder from you first, it is inauspicious." Then she showed the golden earring and said, "Then please give this." She neither said 'smell it' nor did she say 'do not take it away', she took the golden earring and left. After that, that person did not see the golden earring. Because he did not see the golden earring, he began to beat the beggar woman, and the people on the left and right said, "Are you without shame, beating this innocent person with a stick? The golden earring was taken away by the Bhikshuni Pabi." After saying this, the goldsmith ran to where Spomgam was. She was skilled at distinguishing the sounds of men's and women's footsteps, so she quickly put the golden earring in her mouth. When that person approached, Spomgam said to that person, "Son of a prostitute, don't you know that I have been chosen by the king to be a consort? Do not touch me with your hand." She touched her head and said, "Bad woman," then she hit her with her fist, causing her to spit blood and fall to the ground. Her eye sockets were swollen, and she came to the summer palace, and those Bhikshunis asked her, "Holy Mother, what happened?" She said angrily, "Are you satisfied with the misfortune of others?" Then she told the Bhikshunis in detail. From the time when those Bhikshunis with few desires began to scold, until the time of reporting to the Blessed One. After that, the Blessed One, starting from "This happened," until the establishment of the precepts, also said, "If any Bhikshuni begs for obvious signs, that is a Nissaggiya Pacittiya." "Which Bhikshuni" refers to Spomgam, or others similar to her. "Begging for obvious signs" refers to gold or silver. "Nissaggiya Pacittiya" refers to the same as above. So, how does it constitute an offense? If any Bhikshuni begs for obvious signs for her own benefit, that is a Nissaggiya Pacittiya. Begging for gold, that is a Nissaggiya Pacittiya.
