It should be done like this; if used, it is an offense of expiation involving forfeiture. Furthermore, what is meant by "a Bhikshuni"? It refers to the twelve sections. What is meant by "the Bhikshunis"? It refers to those who dwell together and the lay followers. What is meant by "giving clothes"? It refers to any of the seven types. What is meant by "after that"? It refers to another time. What is meant by "being angry, agitated, fierce, and displeased"? It means before the agitation has subsided. What is meant by "snatching"? It means by oneself. What is meant by "causing to snatch"? It means by another. If one says, "I will not give you the Bhikshuni's clothes; return them," then the Bhikshuni uses that garment, which is the remainder of any of the seven types of clothing. What is meant by "should be returned"? It means it should be relinquished. What is meant by "if used"? It means however long it is used. What is meant by "an offense of expiation involving forfeiture"? It is as previously stated. So, how does one incur an offense? It is through bodily movement, verbal expression, and the combination of both. How is it through bodily movement? It is by seizing and snatching with the hand, and as long as the edge of the garment is not separated from the body, it is a minor offense. Upon separation, it is an offense of expiation involving forfeiture. This is through bodily movement. How is it through verbal expression? It is by saying these words, "Bhikshuni, return the clothes," and as long as the edge of the garment is not separated from the body, it is a minor offense. Upon separation, it is an offense of expiation involving forfeiture. This is through verbal expression. How is it through the combination of both? It is by saying "return the clothes" and seizing with the hand, and as long as the edge of the garment is not separated from the body, it is a minor offense. Upon separation, it is an offense of expiation involving forfeiture. This is through the combination of both. There is no offense if it is for another purpose or for disciplinary tools. How is it for another purpose? For example, when the Bhikshunis' co-residents and lay followers are traveling at an untimely and dangerous time, their preceptors and teachers might say, "It would be bad if robbers were to snatch the clothes," and proceed to snatch them. This is for another purpose. How is it for disciplinary tools?

If it is with implements, it is like this: when the monks dwell together, and the lay followers associate and walk with unwholesome friends, may they walk with wholesome friends. Thus, taking away clothes from them, this is like the implements of discipline. The sixteenth expiation is complete. The basis of the story is in Shravasti. At one time, Dharma-dana thoroughly convinced the degraded royal family and their retinue of the truths, and they obtained taxes from King Prasenajit. They thought, "Whatever makes us see the truth, all of that depends on the virtuous friend, the noble Dharma-dana. What should we do for her? The wealth and respect we have obtained from the king, we will surely offer to Dharma-dana." Then, the degraded royal families took that wealth and arrived where Dharma-dana was, and bowed their heads at Dharma-dana's feet, offering her the wealth and respect. Dharma-dana thought, "Has someone been providing the Blessed One with robes and alms for three months?" Then, she began to contemplate it, and knew that the Blessed One only accepted those offerings. Then, Dharma-dana said to those degraded royal families, "Householders, provide the Blessed One with robes and alms for three months, and so on, up to medicine and necessary implements." Then, they began to provide for the Blessed One and the Sangha of Hearers, and for Dharma-dana and her retinue. Then, the wives of those degraded royal families began to attend to those nuns. Those degraded royal families also placed valuable clothes and ordinary clothes for the monks and nuns. In the middle of summer, they were sent elsewhere by the king, and Anathapindika prevented them, and the nun Sakya said to them, "Summer is over," signaling because she wanted clothes, and they said, "Noble mothers."

We have offered the value of those clothes. The silks have been eaten. The nuns said: The Blessed One said that the summer offerings should not be distributed within the summer. At that time, those who wanted to learn did not distribute. The nuns said to the monks, and the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, from "This happened," made it up to the establishment of the training. If a nun obtains a robe arising from waiting within ten days of the last month of autumn, and wants a robe arising from waiting, then that nun should accept it. Having accepted it, it should be held until the time of giving robes. If it is held beyond that time, it is an offense of expiation. Ten days means: a distinction will arise on the tenth day. Nun means: these followers of this Dharma. Offering means: from others. Robe arising from waiting means: there are five robes arising from waiting. What are the five? Coming, preparing to go, the sick, the caretaker, and the stewardess. Robe means: any of the seven. Wanting means: if it is really needed. Should be held until the time of giving robes means: the time of giving robes, which is the distinction of ten days. Beyond that time means: beyond that time. Offense of expiation means: as before. So, how does one become an offender? Any nun, whatever the summer offering, if it is distributed within the summer, and held beyond the time of distinction, then all will become an offense of expiation. If a nun who hides robes is appointed, there is no offense. The seventeenth offense of expiation is complete. The basis is Shravasti. At that time, the Blessed One, relying on Near Joy, established the basis of the training that transforms the individual of the Sangha into one's own. At that time, the twelve groups of nuns accepted offerings for the sake of the Sangha, but transformed them into personal property. At that time, the nuns with few desires rebuked. The nuns said to the monks, and the monks
