Having seen the departed. Alas, I have seen the Sugata. Alas, I have seen the perfectly complete Buddha. Thinking thus in his mind, he made great effort, regarded him as his teacher, kept him in mind, and with all his thoughts, he went to where the Blessed One was, and having gone, he bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One, and said to the Blessed One: Venerable One, the Blessed One is my teacher, and I am the Blessed One's disciple. Venerable One, the Blessed One is my teacher. Teacher! I am the Blessed One's disciple. Disciple! Having said this, the Blessed One said to Light Protector: Light Protector, it is so, it is so. Light Protector, I am your teacher, and you are my disciple. Light Protector, I am your teacher. Teacher! You are my disciple. Disciple! Light Protector, if anyone thinks thus with all his mind, and without knowing, says, 'I am all-knowing,' and without seeing, says, 'I am all-seeing,' and without being a Tathagata, says, 'I am a Tathagata,' and without being an Arhat, says, 'I am an Arhat,' and without being a perfectly complete Buddha, claims, 'I am a perfectly complete Buddha,' Light Protector, that teacher's head will split into seven pieces. Light Protector, because he is a knower, he says, 'I am all-knowing.' Because he is a seer, he says, 'I am all-seeing.' Because he is a Tathagata, he says, 'I am a Tathagata.' Because he is a perfectly complete Buddha, he claims, 'I am a perfectly complete Buddha.' I only teach the Dharma to the disciples with a basis, and not without a basis. It is with renunciation, and not without renunciation. It is with reliance, and not without reliance. It is with protection, and not without protection. It is with miracles, and not without miracles.

It is not so. Odsrung, therefore, you should train yourself in this way: Listen to anything that possesses virtuous qualities. Respect all of them, regard them as teachers, give them special importance, be single-minded, listen attentively, and contemplate with all your heart. Odsrung, therefore, you should train yourself in this way: Abide by observing the arising and ceasing of the five aggregates of clinging. Abide by observing the arising and power of the six sense bases. Abide by establishing your mind well in the four mindfulnesses. When abiding by establishing your mind well in the four mindfulnesses, you should cultivate the seven branches of enlightenment, and having realized the eight liberations with your body, abide in their completion. You should mostly associate with those who are wise and whose conduct is equal to that of my teacher and Brahma, those who possess shame and embarrassment, and always abide in your body with mindfulness, without abandoning it or being separated from it. Odsrung, you should train yourself in this way. Then, the Blessed One correctly instructed Odsrung, caused him to correctly receive, correctly praised him, and correctly delighted him, and then arose from his seat and departed. Then, the venerable Odsrung followed behind the Blessed One, thinking: Wherever the Blessed One resides, I will prepare for him a seat made of a large cloth mat worth one hundred thousand. Then, the Blessed One, knowing with his wisdom the thoughts in the mind of the monk Odsrung, left the path and sat down to one side. Then, the venerable Odsrung quickly brought a large cloth mat worth one hundred thousand and prepared a seat for the Blessed One. He also requested in this way: Blessed One, for the sake of your compassion, please be seated on the prepared seat. Sugata, please be seated on the prepared seat. Thus, I will have long-term benefit, welfare, and happiness. The Blessed One sat on the prepared seat, and having sat, the venerable O

Then, (the Buddha) said to Upali: "Upali, your large cloth sanghati is good! Upali, your large cloth sanghati is soft!" After saying this, the venerable Upali said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, yes, it is so. Sugata, yes, it is so, Venerable, my large cloth sanghati is good! Venerable, my large cloth sanghati is soft! Blessed One, out of compassion, please accept this large cloth sanghati." After saying this, the Blessed One said to the venerable Upali: "Upali, what about a pair of clothes from my wiping cloth?" After saying this, Upali said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, please accept this large cloth sanghati. Sugata, please accept this large cloth sanghati. Venerable, I will take the clothes from the Blessed One's wiping cloth." Then, the Blessed One accepted the large cloth sanghati of the venerable Upali. The Blessed One also gave him the wiping cloth from his own hand. Then, the venerable Upali, through those filled with teachings, studied for eight days and fully enjoyed the alms food. On the ninth day, he no longer studied. Then, the venerable Upali became an Arhat, free from the desires of the three realms, dung and gold were the same to him, the sky and the palm of his hand were the same, possessing such a state of mind, like being soaked in sandalwood, breaking the shell of the egg of ignorance, obtaining wisdom, supernormal powers, discriminating knowledge, and complete discriminating knowledge, no longer clinging to the gains of existence and desire, retreating from respect, becoming an object to be depicted, offered to, and worshiped by the gods, including the gods and their attendants. Then, some people said: "Alas, the bhikshu Upali has realized such great qualities, therefore, his name has become Great Upali, Great Upali." Then, the Blessed One gradually traveled around and arrived at Rajagriha, in the Bright Garden of Rajagriha, Ka
