Sava, wise ones, this is necessary. Holy ones, what is necessary? First, you yourselves must be free from ignorance and become trained. Having heard that they were widely slandering, at that time the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One thought: What the householders are saying is true. Then he commanded: Therefore, my hearers should recite the basis of training in discipline as follows: Do not cross your thighs, but sit on a cushion in another person's house, and you should learn this. The group of six monks, placing their shins on top of each other, sat in another person's house, and the Brahmins and faithful householders slandered them, saying: These holy ones are like beggars, gamblers, and children of reeds, doing this is not proper, do not sit like this. They said: Wise ones, this is necessary. Holy ones, what is necessary? First, you yourselves must be free from ignorance and become trained. Having heard that they were widely slandering, at that time the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One thought: What the householders are saying is true. Then he commanded: Therefore, my hearers should recite the basis of training in discipline as follows: Do not place your shins on top of each other, but sit on a cushion in another person's house, and you should learn this. The group of six monks, bending their legs, sat in another person's house, and some laywomen came to prostrate, and they said "Arogyami," and those laywomen said: Holy ones, why do you say "Arogyami"? They said: You have not prostrated to our feet. When they prostrated to their feet, they measured the size of their buttocks, and said: Ananda and Upananda, look at the difference in the size of these people's buttocks. Those laywomen felt ashamed and sat in silence. At that time the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One commanded: Therefore, my hearers should recite the basis of training in discipline as follows: Do not bend your legs, but sit on a cushion in another person's house, and you should learn this. The group of six monks, spreading their legs, sat in another person's house.

From... Some lay practitioners came and prostrated, saying, "You Arhats still have leftovers." They said, "Holy ones, why do you say there are leftovers?" They said, "You have not worshiped our feet." When they prostrated at the feet of those people, (those people) measured the size of their buttocks and said, "Look at the difference in the size of the buttocks of these people, Shanxi and Jinxi." Those people were ashamed and sat in silence. At this time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed, "Therefore, my Shravaka disciples should recite the root of learning in this way: learn not to spread your legs and sit on the cushion in other people's homes." The Six Groups of monks sat on the cushion with their lower bodies exposed and naked. Brahmins and faithful householders scolded them, saying, "These holy ones are like children, drunkards, ghosts, and gluttons for meat. This is not in accordance with the rules, so don't sit like this." They said, "Knowledgeable people, there is a need for this." Holy ones, what is the need? First, you yourselves are not ignorant and are educated." Hearing them scolding loudly, at this time the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One thought, "The lay people are telling the truth." So he instructed, "Therefore, my Shravaka disciples should recite the root of learning in this way: learn not to expose your lower body and sit on the cushion in other people's homes." The sutra summarizing the learning is: learn not to sit on the cushion in other people's homes without being informed. Do not sit without observing the cushion, do not press down with the weight of your whole body, do not cross your legs, do not cross your thighs, do not put your shins on your shins, do not bend your legs, do not spread your legs, learn not to expose your lower body, and sit on the cushion in other people's homes. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was living on the mountain of the water monster killing children, in the terrible forest, the Deer Park. The enlightened prince invited the Sangha to the lotus palace painted with one hundred and one colors.
