Is it permissible to do so? It may be permissible, and it may not be permissible. We have done it this way. When they said this, the monks reported it to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Therefore, a monk should train not to cover the vegetables with rice. In Shravasti, a householder invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to another house for a meal. That householder had a lot of vegetables and little rice. The group of six monks covered the rice with vegetables. When the householder saw the vegetables, he said: Venerables, is there no rice? They said: Householder, look here. He gave them more rice. The monks entered the monastery and said: Venerable ones, that householder made good vegetables, but there was little rice. The group of six monks said: We got a lot of rice. They told what had happened. The monks said: Is it permissible for you to do so? It may be permissible, and it may not be permissible. We have done it this way. When they said this, the monks reported it to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Therefore, a monk should train not to cover the rice with vegetables. In Shravasti, a ভিক্ষু (bhikṣu, 比丘) who was begging for alms received rice and vegetables while begging. He received vegetables and rice again. He thought: Did I cover the vegetables with rice, and did the vegetables not cover the rice? He felt remorse. The monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Monks, there is no fault in this. Therefore, my Shravaka disciples should recite the root of learning in the Vinaya as follows: Again, because of desire, one should not cover the vegetables with rice, and one should train not to cover the rice with vegetables. The group of six monks held their bowls over food and drink, and the Brahmins and faithful householders scolded them, saying: Venerable ones, cleanliness is different, why do you hold your bowls over food and drink? This is not proper.

Please don't do this! They said: Wise ones, there is a need for this. They said: Holy ones, what is the need? First of all, you yourselves must be free from ignorance and must learn. Having heard them engaging in extensive slander, at that time the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One thought: What the householders are saying is true, and then he said: Therefore, my hearers should recite the basis of learning in the Vinaya in this way: One should train oneself not to hold the alms bowl over food. The sutra summarizing the training is: One should train oneself to take food well. Not continuously, not together with vegetables, in order, looking at the alms bowl, not holding the alms bowl to eat in the future, and also, not covering the vegetables with rice because of desire, not covering the rice with vegetables, one should train oneself not to hold the alms bowl over food. The Vinaya-vibhaṅga, the eighty-third fascicle, the last one. The group of six monks eat food in various ways, and the Brahmins and faithful householders would slander them, saying: The holy ones eat like children and prostitutes, this is not proper, please do not eat like this! They said: Wise ones, there is a need for this. Holy ones, what is the need? First of all, you yourselves must be free from ignorance and must learn. When the group of six monks eat food in other people's houses, they eat very small amounts, and the Brahmins and faithful householders would slander them, saying: The holy ones eat like children, brides of noble families, and prostitutes, this is not proper, please do not eat like this! They said: Wise ones, there is a need for this.

O! Holy ones, what is the need? Firstly, you yourselves should be free from ignorance and should learn. Having heard that they were widely slandering, at that time the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One thought: What the householders say is true. Then he taught: Therefore, my hearers should declare the basis of learning in the Discipline thus: One should train to eat food that is not too small. When the group of six monks ate alms in another's house, they ate very large mouthfuls. The Brahmins and faithful householders would then slander them, saying: The holy ones eat like hungry ghosts, this is not proper, do not eat like this. They said: Wise ones, there is a need for this! Holy ones, what is the need? Firstly, you yourselves should be free from ignorance and should learn. Having heard that they were widely slandering, at that time the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One thought: What the householders say is true. Then he taught: Therefore, my hearers should declare the basis of learning in the Discipline thus: One should train to eat food that is not too large. When the group of six monks ate alms in another's house, they ate inappropriately, and the Brahmins and faithful householders would then slander them, saying: The holy ones eat like children and hungry ghosts, this is not proper, do not eat like this. They said: Wise ones, there is a need for this! Holy ones, what is the need? Firstly, you yourselves should be free from ignorance and should learn. Then he taught: Therefore, my hearers should declare the basis of learning in the Discipline thus: One should train to eat food in moderation. In Shravasti, a householder invited the Sangha of monks, including the Buddha, to another house for a meal, and at that time, there was an elderly monk sitting below the group of six.
