Some donors and faithful householders would scold, saying: These noble ones eat like children, mutes, gamblers, and deaf people. This is not proper; please do not eat like this. They (the group of six monks) said: Wise ones, there is a reason for doing this. Noble ones, what is the reason? First of all, you yourselves are ignorant of the rules and untrained. Having heard them scolding extensively, at that time the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One thought: The householders are telling the truth. Then he taught: Therefore, my disciples who are hearers should recite the basis of learning in this way: One should train to eat food without distinguishing grains. When the group of six monks were eating food in another's house, they said: This curry is too bland! This is too sour! At that time the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One taught: Therefore, my disciples who are hearers should recite the basis of learning in this way: One should train to eat food without being picky. When the group of six monks were eating food in another's house, they would move the food from one cheek to the other while eating. The Brahmins and faithful householders would scold, saying: These noble ones eat like children and ascetics. This is not proper; please do not eat like this. They (the group of six monks) said: Wise ones, there is a reason for doing this. Noble ones, what is the reason? First of all, you yourselves are ignorant of the rules and untrained.

What is the need for this? What is the need for the noble ones? First of all, you yourselves should be free from ignorance and be taught. Having heard that they were widely reproaching, at that time the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One thought: What those householders say is true. Then he taught: Therefore, my hearers should recite the basis of learning in discipline in this way: To learn to eat without letting the food touch the palate. When the group of six monks were eating alms in another's house, they would take a mouthful of food, put half of it in their mouths and half of it would fall into the bowl, and then the Brahmins and faithful householders would reproach them, saying: The noble ones eat like children and prostitutes, this is not in accordance with the rules, do not eat like this. They said: Knowledgeable ones, what is the need for this? What is the need for the noble ones? First of all, you yourselves should be free from ignorance and be taught. Having heard that they were widely reproaching, at that time the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One thought: What those householders say is true. Then he taught: Therefore, my hearers should recite the basis of learning in discipline in this way: To learn to eat without cutting off a mouthful of food. The sutra for collecting the trainings is: not to separate grains, not to mock, not to puff out the cheeks, not to let food touch the palate, to learn to eat without cutting off a mouthful of food. When the group of six monks were eating alms in another's house, they would lick their hands, and the monks said: Long-lived ones, why do you do such an unseemly thing? They said: Long-lived ones, the essence is attached to this. When they were being reproached, at that time the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One taught: Therefore, my hearers should recite the basis of learning in discipline in this way: To learn to eat without licking one's hands. When the group of six monks were eating alms in another's house, they would make the bowl dirty, and the monks said: Long-lived ones, why do you do such an unseemly thing? They said:

Said: Venerable ones, whatever is the essence, cling to this. When they were being scolded, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: Therefore, my disciples should recite the basis of learning in discipline as follows: One should train to eat without shaking the bowl. When the group of six were eating alms in another's house, they shook their hands, and the monks were hit by the water from their hands, and when they were being scolded, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: Therefore, my disciples should recite the basis of learning in discipline as follows: One should train to eat without shaking one's hands. When the group of six were eating alms in another's house, a monk wearing a reddish-yellow robe was sitting below them, and the group of six said: Friend, dear friend, in our hearts, this poor man, we have never worn such a robe before, thinking that we should not like him, they shook the bowl, and the robe of that monk was soiled by the water from the bowl. When he began to scold, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: Therefore, my disciples should recite the basis of learning in discipline as follows: One should train to eat without shaking the bowl. In Shravasti, there was a householder who was very devoted to the naked ascetics. Later, at another time, he developed great faith in the Blessed One, and so he invited the Sangha of monks to another house for a feast, where he distributed flour, and the group of six mixed them together, making them into the shape of a stupa. Half slices of radish were distributed, and they were also inserted on top of it, making it look like a tree of life. Curd was distributed, and it was also placed on top of the radish, making it look like an umbrella. Then he said: Friend, dear friend, this stupa is the terminator who completes the evil destinies. Again, eating and saying: Friend, dear friend, the stupa of the terminator who completes the evil destinies has collapsed.
