Monks should proclaim the basis for training in the Vinaya as follows: One should train not to teach the Dharma while standing to someone who is sitting. The group of six monks taught the Dharma while sitting to someone who was lying down, whereupon Brahmins and faithful householders rebuked them, saying: "Venerable ones, the Blessed One, through three countless eons, practiced austerities and perfected the six perfections through countless hundreds of thousands, and attained unsurpassed wisdom. Do you, without respect or reverence, teach the Dharma while sitting to those who are lying down?" They were speechless. At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: "Therefore, my disciples should proclaim the basis for training in the Vinaya as follows: One should train not to teach the Dharma while sitting to someone who is lying down." The group of six monks taught the Dharma while sitting on a low seat to someone who was sitting on a high seat, whereupon Brahmins and faithful householders rebuked them, saying: "Venerable ones, the Blessed One, through three countless eons, practiced austerities and perfected the six perfections through countless hundreds of thousands, and attained unsurpassed wisdom. Do you, without respect or reverence, teach the Dharma while sitting on a low seat to those who are sitting on a high seat?" They were speechless. At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: "Therefore, my disciples should proclaim the basis for training in the Vinaya as follows: One should train not to teach the Dharma while sitting on a low seat to someone who is sitting on a high seat." The group of six monks taught the Dharma while following behind someone who was walking in front, whereupon Brahmins and faithful householders rebuked them, saying: Venerable ones, the Blessed One, through three countless eons, practiced austerities and perfected the six perfections through countless hundreds of thousands, and attained unsurpassed wisdom. Do you, without respect or reverence, teach the Dharma while following behind someone who is walking in front?" They were speechless.
