那時，眾比丘向世尊祈請，世尊開示說：因此，我的聲聞弟子們應如此誦讀學習律儀之基礎：對無病者走在前方，應走在後方且不說法，應如此學習。六群比丘對無病者走在路上，卻走在路旁說法，於是婆羅門和有信心的居士們便譏諷說：這些尊者們，世尊以三大阿僧祇劫勤修苦行，圓滿了無數百千萬的六度波羅蜜，才證得無上智慧，你們這些無禮貌、不恭敬的人，竟敢對走在路上的人走在路旁說法嗎？他們無言以對。那時，眾比丘向世尊祈請，世尊開示說：因此，我的聲聞弟子們應如此誦讀學習律儀之基礎：對無病者走在路上，應走在路旁且不說法，應如此學習。學習彙集之經是：對無病者坐著，應站立且不說法，應如此學習。對無病者躺臥，應坐著且不說法，應如此學習。對無病者坐在高座上，應坐在低座上且不說法，應如此學習。對無病者走在前方，應走在後方且不說法，應如此學習。對無病者走在路上，應走在路旁且不說法，應如此學習。六群比丘對無病者頭部覆蓋著（東西）說法，於是婆羅門和有信心的居士們便譏諷說：這些尊者們，世尊以三大阿僧祇劫勤修苦行，圓滿了無數百千萬的六度波羅蜜，才證得無上智慧，你們這些無禮貌、不恭敬的人，竟敢對頭部覆蓋著（東西）的人說法嗎？他們無言以對。那時，眾比丘向世尊祈請，世尊開示說：因此，我的聲聞弟子們應如此誦讀學習律儀之基礎：對無病者頭部覆

At that time, the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: "Therefore, my disciples should recite and learn the basis of discipline as follows: When walking in front of a sick person, one should walk behind and not teach the Dharma, thus one should learn. The group of six monks, when a sick person is walking on the road, they walk on the side of the road and teach the Dharma, so the Brahmins and faithful householders criticize them, saying: 'These venerable ones, the Blessed One practiced austerities for three countless kalpas, and perfected countless hundreds of thousands of the six perfections, and then attained unsurpassed wisdom. You are disrespectful and irreverent, how dare you walk on the side of the road and teach the Dharma to those who are walking on the road?' They were speechless. At that time, the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: 'Therefore, my disciples should recite and learn the basis of discipline as follows: When a sick person is walking on the road, one should walk on the side of the road and not teach the Dharma, thus one should learn.' The Sutra of Collecting Trainings is: When a sick person is sitting, one should stand and not teach the Dharma, thus one should learn. When a sick person is lying down, one should sit and not teach the Dharma, thus one should learn. When a sick person is sitting on a high seat, one should sit on a low seat and not teach the Dharma, thus one should learn. When a sick person is walking in front, one should walk behind and not teach the Dharma, thus one should learn. When a sick person is walking on the road, one should walk on the side of the road and not teach the Dharma, thus one should learn. The group of six monks teach the Dharma to a sick person with their head covered, so the Brahmins and faithful householders criticize them, saying: 'These venerable ones, the Blessed One practiced austerities for three countless kalpas, and perfected countless hundreds of thousands of the six perfections, and then attained unsurpassed wisdom. You are disrespectful and irreverent, how dare you teach the Dharma to those with their heads covered?' They were speechless. At that time, the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: 'Therefore, my disciples should recite and learn the basis of discipline as follows: When a sick person's head is cove'

应当学习不对病人说法。六群比丘在病人面前，对没有威仪的人说法，于是婆罗门和有信心的居士们，呵责说：‘诸位尊者，世尊以无数三大阿僧祇劫，行持难行之苦行，圆满了六度波罗蜜多，才证得了无上智慧。你们却对没有威仪、傲慢的人说法吗？’他们都默默不语。当时，比丘们请问世尊，世尊开示说：‘因此，我的声闻弟子们应当这样宣说学习的根本：不对病人面前没有威仪的人说法。’六群比丘在病人面前，对撑着伞的人说法，于是婆罗门和有信心的居士们，呵责说：‘诸位尊者，世尊以无数三大阿僧祇劫，行持难行之苦行，圆满了六度波罗蜜多，才证得了无上智慧。你们却对没有威仪、撑着伞的人说法吗？’他们都默默不语。当时，比丘们请问世尊，世尊开示说：‘因此，我的声闻弟子们应当这样宣说学习的根本：不对病人面前撑着伞的人说法。’六群比丘在病人面前，对交叉双臂的人说法，于是婆罗门和有信心的居士们，呵责说：‘诸位尊者，世尊以无数三大阿僧祇劫，行持难行之苦行，圆满了六度波罗蜜多，才证得了无上智慧。你们却对没有威仪、交叉双臂的人说法吗？’他们都默默不语。当时，比丘们请问世尊，世尊开示说：‘因此，我的声闻弟子们应当这样宣说学习的根本：不对病人面前交叉双臂的人说法。’

One should train not to teach the Dharma to someone who is ill. The group of six monks, while someone was ill, taught the Dharma to those without dignity. Then the Brahmins and faithful householders rebuked them, saying, 'Venerable ones, the Blessed One, through countless three great countless eons, practiced difficult austerities, perfected the six perfections, and attained unsurpassed wisdom. Yet you teach the Dharma to those without dignity and who are arrogant?' They remained silent. At that time, the monks asked the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, 'Therefore, my disciples should recite the basis of training in the Vinaya as follows: One should train not to teach the Dharma to those without dignity in the presence of the sick.' The group of six monks, while someone was ill, taught the Dharma to those holding an umbrella. Then the Brahmins and faithful householders rebuked them, saying, 'Venerable ones, the Blessed One, through countless three great countless eons, practiced difficult austerities, perfected the six perfections, and attained unsurpassed wisdom. Yet you teach the Dharma to those without dignity and holding an umbrella?' They remained silent. At that time, the monks asked the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, 'Therefore, my disciples should recite the basis of training in the Vinaya as follows: One should train not to teach the Dharma to those holding an umbrella in the presence of the sick.' The group of six monks, while someone was ill, taught the Dharma to those with crossed arms. Then the Brahmins and faithful householders rebuked them, saying, 'Venerable ones, the Blessed One, through countless three great countless eons, practiced difficult austerities, perfected the six perfections, and attained unsurpassed wisdom. Yet you teach the Dharma to those without dignity and with crossed arms?' They remained silent. At that time, the monks asked the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, 'Therefore, my disciples should recite the basis of training in the Vinaya as follows: One should train not to teach the Dharma to those with crossed arms in the presence of the sick.'
