The basis for training in discipline should be declared as follows: One should train not to teach the Dharma to someone with a head wrap. The sutra summarizing the training is: One should train not to teach the Dharma to someone with a topknot, wearing a hat, with a diadem, with a garland, or with a head wrap. The group of six were teaching the Dharma to those riding elephants, and Brahmins and faithful householders rebuked them, saying: "Venerable ones, the Blessed One, having practiced austerities for countless eons, completed the six perfections through hundreds of thousands of myriads of kotis, and attained unsurpassed wisdom. Do you, without respect, teach the Dharma to those riding elephants?" They were speechless. At that time, the monks petitioned the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: "Therefore, my disciples should declare the basis for training in discipline as follows: One should train not to teach the Dharma to those riding elephants." The group of six were teaching the Dharma to those riding horses, and Brahmins and faithful householders rebuked them, saying: "Venerable ones, the Blessed One, having practiced austerities for countless eons, completed the six perfections through hundreds of thousands of myriads of kotis, and attained unsurpassed wisdom. The Six Groups of monks taught the Dharma to those who were sitting on vehicles, so the Brahmins and faithful householders (said): Venerable ones, the Blessed One, with countless eons of time, practiced countless hundreds of thousands of hardships, perfected the six perfections, and attained unsurpassed wisdom. Do you, who are without respect and disrespect, actually teach the Dharma to those who are sitting on vehicles? They were speechless. The monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Therefore, my Shravaka disciples should declare the basis of learning in this way: One should learn not to teach the Dharma to those who are sitting on vehicles. The Six Groups of monks taught the Dharma to those who were wearing shoes, so the Brahmins and faithful householders (said): Venerable ones, the Blessed One, with countless eons of time, practiced countless hundreds of thousands of hardships, perfected the six perfections, and attained unsurpassed wisdom. Do you, who are without respect and disrespect, actually teach the Dharma to those who are wearing shoes? Do you teach the Dharma? They were speechless. The monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Therefore, my Shravaka disciples should declare the basis of learning in this way: One should learn not to teach the Dharma to those who are wearing shoes. The Sutra of the Collection of Trainings says: One should learn not to teach the Dharma to those who are riding elephants, riding horses, sitting in palanquins, sitting on vehicles, or wearing shoes. The Six Groups of monks taught the Dharma to those who were holding sticks in their hands, so the Brahmins and faithful householders (said): Venerable ones, the Blessed One, with countless eons of time, practiced countless hundreds of thousands of hardships.
