Thus. The Buddha, the Bhagavan (Sanskrit: Bhagavan, Sanskrit Romanization: Bhagavan, literal meaning: World Honored One), was dwelling at Śrāvastī (Sanskrit: Śrāvastī) in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada's Park. The venerable Nanda, while standing, urinated and defecated, and the Brahmins and faithful householders reproached him, saying: 'The disciples of the venerable ones are ashamed, but this disciple is shameless and stands urinating and defecating.' At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan said: 'Therefore, my disciples should recite this precept in this way, learning in discipline: one should not stand and urinate or defecate, one should learn.' The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling at Śrāvastī in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada's Park. The venerable Nanda went to a washerman and said: 'Good sir, please wash this garment.' He said: 'Venerable, you used to protect us, but now you do not. Why should I wash your garment?' He said: 'Wait a moment.' Then he left and thought: 'I will make that miser unhappy.' So he took a purgative, filled a pot with impure matter, and poured it into the washerman's washing place. Then the washerman arose early the next morning and began to wash the garments. When he smelled the odor of the impure matter, he put his hand to his cheek and was disgusted in his heart. Nanda deliberately thought and went in that direction and said to him: 'Good sir, why are you disgusted?' He said: 'Venerable, someone has poured impure matter into this washing place, and I cannot work. How shall I now mix the washing water?' Nanda said: 'I will make that miser unhappy.' At that time, he began to reproach him, and the monks reported this matter to the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan said: 'Therefore, my disciples should recite this precept in this way, learning in discipline: one should not urinate or defecate in water, one should learn. Except when all places are flooded with water and there is no space. Just as with urination and defecation, spitting, blowing the nose, vomiting, and farting in water

Likewise, one should train without abandoning vows. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in the Nyagrodha garden in Kapilavastu. The venerable Nanda went to the gardener and said: "Good sir, please give me a small garden." He said: "Venerable, you used to protect us before, but now you don't. Why should I give you a garden?" He said, "Wait a moment." Having said that, he left and thought: "I will make that miser unhappy." Then he took a purgative, filled a pot with impure substances, took a broom, and scattered the impure substances all over the garden, making the entire garden unusable. The smell of the impure substances attracted foxes, and they also made the entire garden unusable. Then, the gardener, intending to sell the garden, got up early the next morning and went to the garden. When he saw that the entire garden was covered with impure substances and had been eaten by foxes, making it unsalable, he sat down with his hands on his cheeks, feeling dejected. Nanda deliberately thought about this and went in that direction and said to him: "Good sir, why are you sitting there dejected?" He said: "Venerable, someone has scattered impure substances in this garden, making it unsalable, and now I don't know how to make a living." Nanda said: "Miser, I will make you so unhappy!" As he began to scold him, the monks reported this to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan said: "Therefore, my disciples should recite the basis of training in the Vinaya as follows: One should train not to urinate or defecate in a place where there are people or where there is green grass. Except when everything is covered with grass and there is no space. Just as with urine and feces, one should also train not to discard saliva, mucus, vomit, and phlegm in a place where there is green grass. The summary of the training is: One should train not to stand and urinate or defecate in a place where there are people. One should train not to urinate or defecate, spit, blow one's nose, vomit, or expectorate in water where there are people. One should train not to urinate or defecate, spit, blow one's nose, vomit, or expectorate in a place where there is green grass where there are people.
