Homage! The Buddha, the Bhagavan (Sanskrit, Bhagavan, भगवन्, Possessing Bhagavat), was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti. In Shravasti, a householder invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to another house for a meal. At that time, the venerable Ananda was assigned the turn to receive alms as the distributor. He thought, "What means are there to interrupt this distribution of food?" Thinking thus, he considered, "If someone were to ask me how far it is from Shravasti to Jeta's Grove, what should I say to them? In any case, I must measure the ground with my steps." So, he measured the ground with his steps and came slowly. Then, the monk in charge of distribution thought, "He is taking so long, I might miss the food. I must look." So, he climbed a tree and began to watch. When he saw the venerable Ananda coming slowly, he thought, "From the way he is coming, he is surely going to interrupt my food." Realizing this, he came down from the tree and sat down. The venerable Ananda also arrived, and by that time, the mealtime had passed. He said, "Venerable, from the way you came so slowly, you deliberately made me miss the food. Did you see me? I climbed a tree to look." "Is it permissible for you to climb a tree?" "Perhaps it is, perhaps it is not, but I have already climbed." As he said these words, the monks reported the matter to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan said, "Therefore, a monk should train not to climb trees." After the Bhagavan said that a monk should train not to climb trees, some monks wanted to do painting work but did not know where to hang the rope. The Bhagavan said, "One may climb up to the height of a man. Therefore, a monk should train not to climb higher than the height of a man." After the Bhagavan said that a monk should train not to climb higher than the height of a man, a monk went on a journey with a like-minded companion,

When spending the night on the path of the harmonious Sangha, there arose the fear of a tiger. Those of like mind climbed up into the trees and settled there. That bhikshu climbed up a man's height into the tree and sat there. When the tiger came, those of like mind said, 'Venerable one, a tiger has come, quickly climb higher!' He thought, 'The Bhagavan has not allowed climbing higher than a man's height on a tree, how can I climb higher?' So he stayed right there. The tiger jumped and killed him. At that time, the bhikshus reported this to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan said, 'Therefore, my Shravaka disciples should recite the basis of learning in the Vinaya in this way: Except when harm occurs, one should train not to climb a tree higher than a man's height.' The many precepts of training are completed. The many precepts of training have been explained.
