六群比丘对没有生病却将后背靠着的人说法，婆罗门和有信仰的居士们便呵斥道：‘诸位圣者，世尊以无数百千万劫的勤苦修行，圆满了六度波罗蜜多，证得了无上智慧，你们这些没有威仪和恭敬心的人，却对后背靠着的人说法吗？’他们无言以对。当时，众比丘向世尊禀告，世尊开示说：‘因此，我的声闻弟子们应如是诵读此调伏的学处之根本：应学不为没有生病却将后背靠着的人说法。’学处总摄经是：应学不为没有生病却头戴帽子、缠头巾、反穿衣、以颈后支撑或后背靠着的人说法。 六群比丘对没有生病却梳着发髻的人说法，婆罗门和有信仰的居士们便呵斥道：‘诸位圣者，世尊以无数百千万劫的勤苦修行，圆满了六度波罗蜜多，证得了无上智慧，你们这些没有威仪和恭敬心的人，却对梳着发髻的人说法吗？’他们无言以对。当时，众比丘向世尊禀告，世尊开示说：‘因此，我的声闻弟子们应如是诵读此调伏的学处之根本：应学不为没有生病却梳着发髻的人说法。’ 六群比丘对没有生病却戴着帽子的人说法，婆罗门和有信仰的居士们便呵斥道：‘诸位圣者，世尊以无数百千万劫的勤苦修行，圆满了六度波罗蜜多，证得了无上智慧，你们这些没有威仪和恭敬心的人，却对戴着帽子的人说法吗？’他们无言以对。当时，众比丘向世尊禀告，世尊开示说：‘因此，

The group of six monks were teaching the Dharma to people who were not sick but leaning their backs against something. Brahmins and faithful householders rebuked them, saying, 'Venerable ones, the Blessed One has attained unsurpassed wisdom by practicing austerities for countless hundreds of thousands of kalpas and perfecting the six paramitas. Do you, without dignity or respect, teach the Dharma to those who are leaning their backs against something?' They were speechless. At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, 'Therefore, my Shravaka disciples should recite this basis of training in discipline as follows: One should train oneself not to teach the Dharma to those who are not sick but leaning their backs against something.' The Sutra summarizing the training is: One should train oneself not to teach the Dharma to those who are not sick but are wearing hats, wrapping their heads, wearing clothes backwards, supporting themselves with the back of their neck, or leaning their backs against something. The group of six monks were teaching the Dharma to people who were not sick but had their hair in a topknot. Brahmins and faithful householders rebuked them, saying, 'Venerable ones, the Blessed One has attained unsurpassed wisdom by practicing austerities for countless hundreds of thousands of kalpas and perfecting the six paramitas. Do you, without dignity or respect, teach the Dharma to those who have their hair in a topknot?' They were speechless. At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, 'Therefore, my Shravaka disciples should recite this basis of training in discipline as follows: One should train oneself not to teach the Dharma to those who are not sick but have their hair in a topknot.' The group of six monks were teaching the Dharma to people who were not sick but were wearing hats. The group of six monks taught the Dharma to those who wore crowns, and the Brahmins and faithful householders ridiculed them, saying: "Venerable ones, the Blessed One attained unsurpassed wisdom after practicing diligently for three countless eons, perfecting countless hundreds of thousands of the six paramitas. Are you, who are without dignity and respect, teaching the Dharma to those who wear crowns?" They were speechless. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: "Therefore, my Shravaka disciples should declare the basis for learning the Vinaya in this way: one should learn not to teach the Dharma to those who wear crowns." The group of six monks taught the Dharma to those who wore garlands, and the Brahmins and faithful householders ridiculed them, saying: "Venerable ones, the Blessed One attained unsurpassed wisdom after practicing diligently for three countless eons, perfecting countless hundreds of thousands of the six paramitas. Are you, who are without dignity and respect, teaching the Dharma to those who wear garlands?" They were speechless.
