'Who should we choose?' 'The earth-holder woman.' 'It's okay, let's make a law like this: Whoever among us does not enjoy pleasure with her, the pleasure-seekers will fine him sixty kāpaṣaṇas.' They hired the earth-holder woman Utpala for five hundred kāpaṣaṇas, took her to the garden, and all the pleasure-seekers took turns enjoying pleasure with her. The son of the eastern gatekeeper did not want to enjoy pleasure, so Utpala said to him: 'Prince's son, enjoy pleasure! Otherwise, they will fine you sixty kāpaṣaṇas.' He, fearing punishment, enjoyed pleasure. He developed affection for Utpala, and so he alone took her as his wife. The Licchavis were angry and said: 'The son of the eastern gatekeeper has taken as his wife the woman who should be enjoyed by the group, let's go kill him!' Because the world consists of friends, enemies, and ordinary people, another person went to the eastern gatekeeper and told him what had happened. The eastern gatekeeper was afraid and went to the Licchavis, knelt at their feet and said: 'Please forgive my son!' They said: 'What's wrong, what crime has the prince committed?' He explained it to them in detail. Then some said: 'Wise ones, this eastern gatekeeper has been helping us for a long time. If his son doesn't want the one shared by the group, then give her to him.' Others said: 'It's okay, let's do that.' So they gave Utpala to him. The son of the eastern gatekeeper, because he had received her from the group, without hesitation took Utpala as his wife. At this time, a Brahmin was walking along that road, saw it, and spoke this verse: The best of men, the incomparable victor, the savior Śrāvaka, like a Mandāra flower, sister, who is this boy? She also spoke this verse: Brahmin, this is my brother, the son of my brother, the son and nephew. His father is my father, becoming a brother, and now he is my husband. Hearing this, Lotus Color sent a maid to ask her mother, "What are these two girls saying?" She said, "These two are crazy, not liars. What is true in this? Your son, the one I abandoned at the east gate, is now your husband. Your daughter, the one I abandoned at the west gate, is now your wife." Lotus Color thought, "Before, I was a mother and of different sizes, and now I am a daughter and of different sizes again.
